Went to my local store and bought an HP 63 XL to replace the HP 63 which ran out.

I am getting "the indicated cartridges are not intended for use in this printer."

Does this printer support XL cartridges?

I have tried cleaning the contacts like the forum suggests.

@golfprofred

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer and after installing an HP 63 XL cartridge, the printer displays an error message as "the indicated cartridges are not intended for use in this printer."

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Does the printer detect the old cartridge without an error?
  • Do you have another cartridge to check with?

I did check and pleased to inform you that HP 63 XL cartridge is compatible and should work fine. I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector. Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

If the printer continues to reject the HP 63 XL cartridge then I suggest you to perform the steps as described in detail from this link: http://hp.care/2hJ2UKt

If the issue persists then I suggest you to replace the cartridge with another HP 63 XL cartridge and check.

I hope this information helps. Feel free to let me know the results. All the best! 🙂

The printer recognizes the old cartridge just fine.

I bought a Black and a Color combo pack.  I only changed the black.

I will try resetting the printer as you suggested a bit later.

Kazi,

Same outcome, this experience has been a huge waste of my time.

I suppose I will order a non-XL cartridge after I return the two-pack I ordered.

<sigh>

@golfprofred,

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the issue still persists after following the steps provided in the previous interaction.

Let me jump in with a solution for this issue in place of my colleague as he is out of the office today.

This issue could occur if the electrical contacts on the printer or the cartridge are defective.

You may try the non-XL cartridge or you may contact HP phone support for further assistance at the link: www.hp.com/contacthp

You have a good day ahead.

I bought a non-XL HP 63 black cartridge today and it worked...

Not sure if or when I will try another XL cartridge.

@golfprofred,

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the issue resolved after you installed the non-XL cartridge.

This could be an issue with the XL cartridge. You may contact HP phone support regarding the XL cartridge at the link: www.hp.com/contacthp or you may return the XL cartridge to the store.

You have a good day ahead.
