shows ink system failure on printer.also shows printhead malfunction. this all started when i took out the yellow cartridge from this printer[was working fine] and put it into identical printer in my house cuz it was out. that did not work so brought yellow cartridge back out and all these problems started. Have went thru the hp list of things to do like uplugging and plugging back in. cleaning contact points on cartridges. nothing working. have different cartridges that are new  also no luck. when i did take printhead out it did have red color that i wiped up on the bottom side so i replaced that cartridge

printer model office jet pro 8600 . operating system windows 8.1

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve the ink system failure message on your Officejet Pro 8600 printer.  If the first ten steps do not resolve the issue I would suggest removing the cartridges, remove the printhead and soak it as described in the post here (for a different model, but do the same things).
