Hi (ID 2040x),
As concern your problem i suggest you 2 things.
1st:
uninstall your printer driver & re-install it carefully.
And check it again if it work or not?
If you tried it OR re-installation did not work then try this.
It may be the service of the print spooler would be stopped.
For that, follow the given steps:
1- Unplug the USB from the computer.
2- Then, click on Start-> Serach, type services.msc there.
3- Locate Print spooler.
4- Right click on this and select Stop, after this , again right click on this and select Start. We have to do these steps 5 times (stop-start).
5- Then go to the printer's window , right click on an empty place and select Refresh. Refresh the inter and faxes window 2-3 times.
If the issue, it not resolved, you can get back to me anytime. i would be glad to assist you.
i ll make a video of above method and upload it soon for you.

Mehmood:
Thank you for this quick. The issue is not the print spooler being stuck or not started as I made sure the print spooler was started before attempting a print job.
Once again, the spooler was running + there was no documents waiting to print.
Here is what happens step by step when i tried to print a 43.7 kb PDF file.
1) I click print, select my hp 1020 printer (the only printer attached to my machine with a USB cable)
2) the document appears in the print queue.
3) the HP 1020 actually makes noise as if it is getting ready to print
4) The print spooler STOPS
5) no paper come out
when i restart the print spooler. No document is queued up and nothing prints
I remain convinced that some recent driver update or similar is mucking up my win 7 home premium 64 bit software

Hi again,
if i am rightly understanding your problem, then it is like mine problem when i am on windows vista. here is my problem which i had on vista:
1- when we send print command to printer, printer starts (initial warm-up) and stops (and no page printing).
2- also there is nothing showing in print queue (document to be print).
Note: in my case it happens only when i start printer (or windows) & gave my 1st print command.
my solution for this problem is underrated:
1- when it happens, give print command again (without restarting windows, spooler or printer)
2- It should start printing without any problem
3- after that print as much page as you want (there ll be no problem )
4- this problem only occured when you start your windows (i think) and printer also
If the problem is not same as i noted. Then please let me know i ll be happy to help you .
I also suggest you to contact HP customer support (Online Chat) it will be very helpful.
regards

Mehmood:
Thanks again for your suggestions. An HP support type did email me suggesting that IE8 could interfere with a print spooler so I should uninstall IE. Not a problem (as i used firefox for years + didn't even know msft put in IE 8 with one of its updates). When uninstalled ie8, all the problems with the HP 1020 went away.:robothappy:
Summary:
1) on windows home premium 7 x64 bit, 6 gig ram + latest HP 1020 driver (from 5 Nov 09) with IE 7, print spooler crashes + no prints
2) uninstalling ie8 (thru add/remove program + then turn on/off microsoft servics on the left) fixes the problem and i can print

Sorry to bump this thread but I've followed your youtube.com video in an attempt to install the drivers for my laserjet 1020 printer and windows gives me an error.
This is the error it gives me: "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. One of the installers for this device cannot perform the installation at this time."
I'm running the 32-bit version of Windows-7 and have tried installing several times and I get the same error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to report that uninstalling the IE 8 components for a Windows 7 64-birt system finally got the printer driver for the LJ1020 working on a client's computer. Could not figure it out until I read this thread! Now he is using Firefox as his only browser, but at least his printer works with his new computer.

Well, I guess I spoke a bit early. The client is still having the same crashes as before. I found this article that helps explain things: http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?admit=109447626+127179166171...
Seems like the issue is still with the HP drivers when sending a document to the printer that it can't handle and will crash the spooler.
Thanks for nothing, HP. I have advised my client to purchase another brand, and I will be also taking my own advice as well in the future.
