HP M1212nf connected to a network via wired connection.

From Dell laptop with Windows 7 run Windows Fax and Scan, New Scan, program doesn't do a scan but returns to main program screen, this had been working a week ago.  From New Scan screen, change scanner, select the 1212 (only scanner shown), select properties, test, returns your imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test.

From HP Windows XP desktop and laptop, HP Scan To, returns error Cannot communicate with scanner.

Can print from all PCs to this printer on the network.

Uninstalled printer from Dell laptop, downloaded the software again and reinstalled.  Same results.  Checked the Windows services for WIA as I found in other posts.  Unplugged printer from power and reconnected.

Ran HP scan doctor from Dell laptop, Device Manager get green check mark.  WIA, get error, The scan process was ended by the user.  HP Twain scan, get cannot communicate with scanner. HP Scan get green check mark.

If I reboot the HP laptop running XP and don't start any other programs, HP Scan To will work.  If I start any other programs and try Scan To, I get the cannot communicate with scanner error.  Tried rebooting the HP destop and running Scan To before starting any other programs and get the cannot communicate error.

Sounds like you are having some issues scanning, Ronml. My first question is, when you make copies from the ADF does the same thing happen

When you are putting documents in the scanner, are you adjusting the paper guides to fit to the edges of the media you are using? Sometimes this can effect what the printer registers. Additionally, follow through this post just to be sure your machine is getting the correct power and it's not the media sensor malfunctioning.

Let me know how this goes!

I have same issue.

So far i made more then 700 scanes and few days ago it just stop working.

Printer is connected on ruter over cable and i am on wirelles. I can print, but i can't scan. Copy function on LaserJet is working, so scaner is operational, i just can't access to it from lap top (actually two laptops, bot have same problem, so it is not problem on them).

I used original disk to repair drivers but everything is same after instalation was finished.

Any advices/ideas how to repair this?

No, copies work.  I'm using the flatbed for scanning not the ADF.

To start out sounds like this is a driver issue. I want to start with being sure that the removal of the software and reinstallation happened in the best possible fashion. I want you to follow my steps so I can be sure that we are both starting on the same page.

First if you use a USB cord, make sure to remove it (this is important). Do not plug it back in until the software directs you to. Then go through the Devices and Printers, Programs and Features and Device Manager folders and insure that all copies, files, and programs related to the printer are removed. Then as directed, restart the computer.

In the START menu type "%temp%" and press ENTER. Here I want you to press Ctrl+A and hit DELETE. Some of the files will not allow you to delete them, skip those files and delete the majority that allows it.

find and install the FULL FEATURE SOFTWARE if it is available :

Install that and let me know the result! Should this not work, I will proceed to other steps but this is a good place to start so we are on the same page.

Have a great day!

Hello

I have the same problem, i try all the steps to resolve this problem, that are posted on the web but nothing works.

After a few days of installing drivers and uninstaling and HP doctor "nothing" i do one more thing...

I CHANGE THE USB CABLE.(with first usb cable it works fine to print but not to SCAN)

After i change it all works fine!

I hope  this will help others to past over this stupid comunication problem trough usb.

Trying to use M1212nf to scan. Don't remember if I've scanned with it before. It is connected to network via cable. Laptop gets "cannot communicate with scanner" error. Desktop scans in color, but will not scan in b&w. Gets a vague "An error occurred" message. Can print from both computers. Laptop has new driver installed. Both computers are running Windows 10.
