HP m553
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My M553 will not complete the startup process.  When I turn it on the screen is blank and three dummy lights show up as the green semicircle, green hourglass and red caution triangle.  The fan continuously runs but it never completes the startup to a ready state.  I have rebooted, unplugged and restarted the printer many times, no luck.

Any solutions?

It sounds like the connection from the control panel to the formatter is loose or a connection is unplugged. The formatter is located on the rear of the unit, just up from the power connection and is protected with a square cover with two thumb screws.

On the back of the unit, left of the formatter cover there is a small hole that an unfolded paperclip will fit in.  Turn the unit on, load the printer with paper and wait for 3 minutes to make sure the warm up process is complete. Press the paperclip into the hole to perform an engine test. If you hold it, you will get a continuous engine test. The printer will make more noise and print pages with colored lines across the page. This indicates that the printer can print a page and that the engine itself is ok.

If that passes, I would check all the connections on the formatter. Be sure to UNPLUG FIRST, touch a metal part of the printer chassis, such as the formatter frame, and then reseat all the connections.

If that does not help, contact HP phone support.
