HP Envy 5540
macOS 10.12 Sierra

For months, I have been using the cartriadgres hp 62XL's, both colors and black ink for no problem.  Suddenly, my printer sayan error message as follows:

Title: X Incompatible Cartridges

Message: The indicated cartridges are not intended for use in this printer.

I have not changed anything. I rebooted the printer, pulled out the cartridges and set them back in place, etc. but the error message keeps coming.

Do I need a new printer?

Following the document you sent me, I cleaned the cartridges and the cartridge beds for for multi-colored and black cartdidges. I cieaned them again, as the document suggested. Cleaning did not help solve the problem.

As a next step, I pulled out the multi-colored cartridge, and discovered that the printer works with only black cartridge as a single cartridge mode. So, I ordered a new multi-colored cartridge from the hp Store.

A new multi-colored cartridge arrived today, and the printer works just fine !  As a retrospect, the old multicolored cartidge suddenly became disfunctional, and the printer gave me a misleading error message.

So, I followed your suggestion and solved the problem. I wish the printer error message had been more true to the situation and lead me to a solution immediately. On the other hand, thank you for your help. without your help, I would have  discarded my printer and purchased a new printer (with a new set of cartridges) .

Thanks for solution. But boooo!!! to HP - their instructions are incorrect - they don't clarify which cartridge to replace - there was a black dot so I assumed the black cartridge - NOPE! was the other one - so 2 cartridges lost and replaced, not just one....

HP's gain and my loss.... Why don't they make instructions more clear.... Hmmmm.. Well they get the $$$$$
