Latest OS update to macOS 10.12.3 seems to have broken scanning. I can scan and see the results in the scanning app, but when I save the result, the output is all black. I've tried multiple save file formats, PDF, JPEG, PNG, etc., but the result is the same. Is there a new driver scheduled soon?

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Officejet 4500 printer. I understand that you are unable to save scanned files and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.
Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,
Install the HP driver with Apple Software Update.
- Click the Apple menu, then click System Preferences.
- Depending on your operating system version, click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners.
- Check if the name of your printer displays in the Printers list.
- Click the Use or Print Using menu, then select the name of your printer.
- Click Add to add the printer to the list.
- Close the System Preferences window.
Uninstall the printer software, click here to refer the document.
Use the HP Easy Scan app to scan and save the file.
- Download and install the HP Easy Scan app from the App Store.
- Place the document or photo printed side down on the scanner glass, then close the scanner lid.
- In HP Easy Scan, select your printer name from the Scanner drop-down menu.
- Select your scan type from the Presets menu.
- Click Scan.
- Click Scan Next Item to add additional pages, or click done.
- To save your scans to a folder on the Mac, click Send in the bottom right corner of the window, then click Folder.
- In the window that displays, click the Where menu to browse to the folder you want to save the file to, then click Save.
- Follow the use HP Easy Scan app procedure mentioned under frequently asked questions in the article.
Let me know how it goes.
If the issue is resolved and you appreciate my help,
Please click the "Accept as Solution" button and the "Thumbs Up".
Cheers

Thanks for your help. After uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver from Printers & Scanners in System Preferences, and using Updates in the App Store to restore the printer drivers, I'm able to use the standard Apple Image_Capture.app program to scan and save images. This probably worked before, but I didn't test it. However, HP Easy Scan is not functional and when I try to scan, I get this:
HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z is currently unavailable. Ensure your device is powered on, check the connection, and ensure your network is functioning properly. If these conditions are correct, restart the device and try scanning again.

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that the issue still persists after following the steps provided in the previous interaction.
This issue could occur if you have not installed the latest version.

Let me know if this works.
You have a good day ahead.
