Solution three: Clean the ADF scanner glass strip, the white ADF plastic strip, the scanner lid, and the scanner glass

If any part of the scanner glass or scanner lid has fingerprints, smudges, lint, dust, or other debris, this can slow performance and affect copy and scan quality. To resolve this issue, clean the ADF scanner glass strip, the white plastic ADF strip on the underside of the scanner lid, the underside of the scanner lid, and the scanner glass.

My HP8600 has been printing a black vertical line during auto loading for months. Tried all methods of unplugging. I discovered the small glass at the left side of the manual loader had a paper speck on this glass. It required scrapping it off carefully and cleaning. The manual loader is using this glass to make copies and is rather rough, especially on originals, and sometimes taking small specks of paper off the original. Overtime they deposit on the glass. I have to clean it everytime I see this line.

Just use a little windex and soft cloth or paper towel and clean it and it should work.

Take any UPS or power strips out of the power management system.  In other words...plug the printer straight into the wall.  I've experienced this multiple times, works every time.

Clean this glass to resolve the issue as shown in solution three, figure six in the document here.

I am having same issue while copying using my 8600. Have tried all direct plug, leave off and cleaning. Nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

Does this occur only when you copy or scan from the document feeder?  Try making a copy from the flatbed glass.  If this works then the issue is a smudge or spot on the thin (about 1" wide) glass on the left side that is used for the ADF.  Clean this glass to resolve the issue as shown in solution three, figure six in the document here.  Even a tiny spec in this area can cause a black line on the print when using the ADF.

Excellent solution when coupled with another responder's suggestion to lengthen the power-off time to 5 minutes!!  Thanks

Tried the 5 minute thing--worked for a day then black line (I get only one line) again.  HELP!!!
