I had found info online regarding 'incompatible print cartridge' error which is a pain to have to go through process for each page printed & often happens alternately with the 'print cartridge incorrectly installed' error.  This is C4480 PhotoSmart printer that now looks VERY UNSMART!  I have scanned this forum & read a good post from some time ago about how there is never a true answer for a fix.  I have only EVER USED original HP cartridges & machine is clean.  I went through process to clean & am on 3rd cartridge that still produces this error.  I am so disgusted with this that we are likely to never purchase another HP product & have another HP problem as well.  So I am asking nicely to see if can get a fix for this that will work.  I have tried the usual of turning off, unplugging & have even pulled paper out to where the door drops completely flat in addition to the obvious of taking cartridges out & putting back in.  After reading so many posts about these two errors, anyone would come to the conclusion that there is definitely a problem with HP printers as many other models also have problems.  I look forward to receiving an answer as I am trying to avoid purchasing another printer esp. with all these cartridges on hand. Thank you!

Hi,

I am having the same problem.  I was doing some printing last night when the paper suddenly got jammed in my printer.  After I pulled it out, I got an error message stating that the print cartridges were incorrectly installed.

I tried to reset the printer and clean the printer cartridges but to no avail.  Then I spoke to a representative of the company and he suggested that I get a new printer, even though mine has hardly been used.

Could you please message me and let me know what to do in this situation?

Thanking you,

Dario

As I understand you are getting an error message that the printer cartridges are incorrectly installed on your HP Photosmart printer. Don't worry as I have a few steps to help you get through this concern,

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you checked for any obstructions inside the printer?

Does the printer roller move freely?

Have you tried to cleaning the cartridges and carriage contacts?

In the meantime, let's try to perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Please make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Let’s first try and make a “photocopy” to determine whether the issue is with the printer or not. Place a document on the scanner glass and choose “Copy” option. If the printer is making a good copy, then the printer hardware is fine.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to check for the steps suggested in the support document for -  A 'Cartridge Problem', 'Incompatible Cartridge', or 'Cartridge Missing or Damaged' Message Displays on the Computer or Printer Control Panel - Click here

Let me know how that pans out,

Thank you to both Dario_Western & Jeet_Singh for this situation being discussed again.  I very carefully followed the order of the hard reset on printer & when cartridges were reinstalled (genuine HP is all ever used) the first message is incompatible print cartridge.  I have to use the combination every time I need to make a copy or print something. Go through that & then says incorrectly installed cartridge for which I open the door & close it to proceed. Then may get incompatible error again.  As someone mentioned several years ago on this forum there is a problem with this printer.  Unfortunately we have taken great care of all our 'tech' stuff that it looks new.  My husband said when ink ($50) ran out could buy another printer. When display came up 'low on ink' I actually took a picture of display.  Will be a higher end Canon! Through with this headache!  I would recommend to those with this problem to save yourself & get something else. I have done everything could find to make this work. Appreciate those who tried to help. HP needs to refund some $s to people who have tried to work with this.
