This sounds like a media issue. First, what printer are you working with, on what operating system and using what program to print from? Have you set the default paper size for both the program and the printer to be set for 5.5x5.5? Let me know and I will get right back in touch with you!

PS I hope you are having a wonderful day!

I am operating on an iMac with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion printing on an HP 8600 Pro and attempting to print from a Pages document. Does that help identify my problem of trying to print a 5.5" square illustration on a portrait orientation of a Pages single sheet to a 5.5" x 5.5" envelope?

Yes, by the way, the default size of the paper has been set to 5.5". The printer does not give me this size to set to default. I merely inserted the envelope in the center and moved the envelope size borders to contact it. Does this give additional help?

Generally speaking, you are going to need to use an older driver to find the compatability for the more unique paper sizes. However, on Macs this should remain unchanged. If you to to print a document in the default print window there should be an option for "Paper Size" here you should be able to select "Manage Custom Sizes." Is this feature not available?

The printer allows for custom management. However, it did not "speak" to the printer by telling it the size of the envelope. The custom set up is only for the paper on which the media was produced. The envelope sizes, though there is a wide variety, do not include the 5.5 x 5.5 size.

For this printer the paper size compatibility is built directly into the Mac OS. If that size is not supported then it is not supported by the operating system and you will have to contact Mac support for any further help I would suspect.
I hope you have a geat day!
