This printer comes from an office where it was working fine via ethernet.

It isn't configured/has an anti theft system so that in can only work in the office, right?

My OS is windows 7 64 bit ultimate.

The printer does print out configuration page with IP etc. I have been able to successfully print pages from another printer which is connected to the same router as my computer (and now 2100 TN is). There's nothing wrong with the ethernet cable either.

I followed
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02850101&lang=en&cc=us&taskI...

and installed PCL5, everything seemed fine until test page, which was not being printed. If trying to print from word/word pad nothing happened either. Looking at windows printer dialog shows "Error - printing". Same with PCL6, and if choosing windows update install drivers in the add printer wizard.

If trying to add it as a new product I now get dialog saying "additional information required":

restarted printer. status in wordpad says ready. still doesn't work.

Dear sir, it seems you are the one not providing good information.

Through google I found out that the way to perform a cold reset of this particular model is holding the JOB CANCEL button, not the big/GO BUTTON.

Once I did that I got a new IP-adress with my routers standrad format, and I just now succesfully printed the test page.

The information you are giving us is not very good. I take it this printer was installed some place and you got it now and you are trying to connect it to your home network? Am I correct. If so the ip address frame has to match the ip address frame of your home network. Best way is to perform a cold reset of the printer by powering off. Now power on but at the same time hold the big button down until all 3 light cycle and then release. When the printer comes to ready, press both the small and large buttons at the same time to print a config page. You should get a second page which will be the network setttings of the printer. Use the ip address on the second page to load the printer as a local tcp/ip printer to your computer. Just use add printer, next, local printer, next and on the port page choose create port at the bottom and in the drop down choose standard tcp/ip and then just follow the instructions on the screen.

yes, it comes from an office and is now being used in my home.

I unplugged the printer, moved it closer to switch so that I could use the ethernet cable that was used in the office.

I pressed and held GO button -> plugged in power. Immediately all lights turned on for a second, but did not began to cycle, I held for a about  1 min. I released and 3x2 configuration papers were printed, before I pressed the cancel button.

All has the same IP as before, both first paper and second paper.

Holding large and small button also prints out 2 config papers, with same IP.

Just in case I will add that I have removed the plastic lock, so I'm not actually pressing the GO plastic button but the actual button on the chip of the printer.

edit: Reading through manual atm... suggest trying to printvia parallel cable, which I don't have. Going to try to rename printer as suggested with HP laserjet utility. We know there's nothing wrong with printer since it was working in office. Also the GO-light is steadily glowing, indicating there's nothing wrong.

edit2: I think you are on to something with the IP frame: it doesn't look anything at all like the IP the other HP (color laserjet 2840) recieved from the router some months ago. It was

192.168.1.40 but laserjet 2100 has 10.17.30.11

edit3: the utility doesn't seem to be available for w7... can't find it. Removed all other printers in printer section of control panel. Just to try I added the printer-> did not tick "quiery the device for driver". At some point again the mentioned ""additional information required" dialog came up. I choose generic network something. Then choose HP from list, laserjet 2100 PCL6 driver. Test page does not print... wordpad does not print either. Same as in original post. The printer's GO button i still glowing steadily.

edit4: again tried cold reset but a slight variance. First plugged in power than 1 second later held in big button/GO button. All lights just glow steadily, I held for 1 min, then released. Now all lights blinked 2-3 times. Printer printed 2x4 configuration pages until I pressed job cancel. Still same IP.

edit5: firewall has been turned off in router before taking printer home.

At least I got you on the right track. I work on so many of these printers I gave you the 2200 procedure which replaced the 2100 back in 1998. Getting older and the memory is not what it used to be. Happy you got it working.
