Hi @Rubandub ,
I see that you are having issues receiving faxes, the printer is printing out the error report of "No Fax Detected".
I would really like to be able to help you resolve this issue.
Check these settings on the printer:
Confirm the fax number:
Go to setup, fax setup, advanced setup, confirm fax #.
Turn off error correction:
Go to setup, service, fax service, error correction and turn if off.
Set the fax speed to medium:
Go to setup, fax setup, advanced setup, fax speed and select medium.
Turn off the private receive:
Go to setup, fax setup, advanced setup, private receive. Turn it off.
Test the fax.
I have provided a document with some steps to try if you are still having issues.
Update the printer's firmware if the issue persists. HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw Drivers.
Please provide in detail the results if you are still having issues.
What were the results of the fax test?
What type of connection do you have? (Analogue, DSL, Cable Modem)
Are you using the 2 wire phone cable?
Do you have distinctive ring set up on the line?
Is there any voice mail set up?
Do you have a answering machine? (Where is it connected to?)
Where is the fax cable connected to? (modem, wall jack)
Is there a phone also connected the printer?
Have a nice day!
Thank You.

Hello,
I have been experiencing a similar problem. I am able to send faxes just fine. However, for some reason, faxes come through less than 10% of the time. It will ring once and attempt to connect, then after about 30 seconds, it will beep once and the screen will read "No fax detected". I can't figure out why some can still come through if most of the time I receive this error. I have already done the following:
- Confirmed the fax number
- Turned off error correction
- Set the fax speed to medium
- Turned off the private receive
- Tested the fax (numerous times, and it says "pass" and states it is connected)
- Checked that all drivers and firmware are updated, which they are
I have a cable modem connection. The wire cable seems to be connected properly, according to the manual. I have distinctive ring turned to "all rings". Since this line is for fax only, there is no voicemail set up for it. The fax cable is connected to the modem. No phone is connected to the printer.
Please help! This is being used in a business in which faxing is vital, so I need to reach a resolution as soon as possible.

Hi @Lyndsay,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I read your post and see that you are getting the error "No Fax Detected", when receiving faxes. Thank you for providing the steps that you have already tried. I would like to help you out today.
Please try testing the fax, by calling the HP Fax Server, HP Fax Products - Testing Your HP Fax Machine with the HP Fax Test Service. Let me know the results.
You can also try the steps in this document to see if they may help with this situation, HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw - Cannot Send or Receive Faxes.
Your distinctive ring may be setup for single, double, triple or Double & Triple. You could try each setting or contact the phone company to find out for sure how many rings your distinctive ring is setup for.
Please let me know the outcome and if there is anything else I can help you with. Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. For a while it seemed that the situation had resolved because all incoming faxes were being received properly. However, today I ran into the same problem with the "No fax detected" error. I tried testing the fax by using the HP fax test service, and I received the fax back without a problem. Is there some reason why my product would be selectively allowing some faxes to go through while others are unable to connect?

Hi @Lyndsay,
Are the faxes being sent from same location?
Could it be a problem at the other end? Ask the sender if they are having issues sending to others.
It may be a issue with the Distinctive Ring. Usually it would be setup for single, double, triple or Double & Triple. I would check with the contact the phone company to find out for sure.
I will send you another step to try in a private message.
In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.
Please keep me posted. Thank you.
