If memory serves  me the red line over the icon which is actually a picture of a power cord is what shows up when the printer is loading the operating system at startup. It is just telling you not to unplug the device while it is doing what it is doing. At the bottom of the window will be message of loading, inititializing or whatever to show the progress of the printer powering on. You need to wait until the printer comes to ready which will be when you can then use it. Also suggest you leave the printer on all the time since this printer takes a long time to power on to the ready mode. There is a sleep mode which will place the printer in sleep mode after a set time so it will not use any energy. Have the printer plugged directly into a wall socket and not a power strip and leave on all the time. As to marks on paper please post a picture of the defect but most times marks are caused by a bad toner cartridge.

I have a problem with your image. It is not from an HP M602 printer. The display of the M602 printer is on the right side of the top cover and is mounted flush to the frame. Your image looks like a printer where the menu can be raised or lowered and has a black border which the M602 does not. Suggest you post with the correct model of your printer.

Take a picture of the printer that shows the complete front of the printer. Attached is a picture that I have and you can see the display is not the same as yours.

Your first picture of the menu threw me off since with the black border it looks like the menu of one of hp's MFPs. You did a great job of just showing what was on the display and nothing else of the printer. That said can you tell us if the printer ever comes to ready or that icon goes away and the ready light comes on the printer. The reason I ask it would appear your display has an issue where it should be showing the power plug with the line thru it which is telling the user not to unplug the printer while it is booting, but yours is distorted. Now it could be an operating system issue so using the link below try method 3 with using a usb thumb drive where the printer does not come to ready. You will be able to tell right away since if you can not read the preboot menu then it would mean you have an issue with either the formatter or the display. If you can read the preboot menu, then try the upgrade and see if that solves the issue. Good Luck.
