I have two scanners with the same issue. I also purchased the ADF Maintenance Replacement kit..... despite seeing everyone here failing.

I called HP technical support. They were happy to indicate both machines are out of warranty and added that I need to take them to an authorized HP repair shop. Unfortunately, the closest one is 2-3 hours drive away.

I think I'll stick with Fujitsu in the future.

I am having the same problem now too.  My scanner was working perfectly up until yesterday.  At noon, it just quit.  Keeps saying there is nothing in the ADF.  I've tried with different types of paper, from two different computers.  My rollers are fine.  It has to be a sensor issue.  Very disappointing that no one from HP is answering this column.  This scanner has been fabulous until now. I would hate to have to buy another, and it would not be an HP!
