@msavalla

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the scanner drops out or disconnects at times,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Is it the scanner alone that stops working or does the printer completely disconnect from the network?

Do you get an error message for the scanner connection drop?

While you respond to that, here's a few things you can try:

If you get any error messages as such for the scanner, Click here to diagnose the issue.

If the printer disconnects from the network every now and then, try the below steps:

Step 1: Restart the computer, printer, and router

Restart the computer, printer, and router to resolve any connectivity error states.

 NOTE:

The following steps temporarily disconnect network and Internet connections, and require restarting your computer. Complete any tasks or downloads in progress before continuing.

  1. Turn off the router by pressing the power button or disconnecting the power cord.

  2. Turn off the printer, and then unplug any USB or Ethernet cables.

     NOTE:

When a USB or Ethernet cable is connected to the printer, the printer cannot connect wirelessly.

  3. Close all running programs on your computer, and then shut down the computer.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to the router, and then wait for the Internet activity light to display a normal connected status.

  5. Turn on the printer.

  6. Turn on the computer.

If the wireless connection drops, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only)

HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor  to quickly and automatically perform several troubleshooting tasks known to resolve this issue. When this link is clicked, HP Print and Scan Doctor is downloaded using your Internet browser's download capabilities.

Hi, I have tried all of these solutions, I always get it going again but it is very frustrating.  It happens sometimes once or twice a day or every 3rd or 4th day.  I had the router replaced by the provider.  Everything checks out.  The printer is about 4' fm the router.  The signal is good.  Should I take the printer in to a rep for a check up?  Its only 1.5 yrs old.

Thank you for replying with this overwhelming and detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

Apart from the other steps mentioned in the link I shared earlier,
Please try the below mentioned steps to find a fix:

HP regularly releases printer updates. Updating the printer firmware might resolve the issue.

  1. Make sure the printer is on and connected to the computer, either through your local network or a USB cable.

  2. Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then enter your printer model number.

  3. Select your operating system if required.

  4. Click Firmware, and then click Download.

If a Firmware section is not listed, an update is not currently available for your printer.

  5. Click Use HP Download and Install Assistant (Recommended), click Next, and then click Install now.

  6. When the HP Printer Update window opens, see if the printer serial number displays.

    • If the serial number displays, select the checkbox next to it, and then click Update.

    • If the serial number displays but the status is 'not applicable' (grayed out), you do not need to complete the firmware update. Click Cancel.

    • If the serial number does not display and your printer uses a network connection, connect a USB cable to the printer and computer, wait 20 seconds, and then click Refresh. When the serial number displays, select the checkbox next to it, and then click Update.

  7. When the update completes, click OK.

  8. If you connected a USB cable to update your network printer, remove the USB driver installed by Windows.

    1. Search Windows for Devices and Printers, and then click Devices and Printers in the list of results.

    2. Right-click the USB printer device that matches your printer model, and then select Remove Device.

    3. Disconnect the USB cable from the printer and the computer, and then restart the computer.

You could also try to Assign a manual IP address to your printer

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to connect your printer to the wireless network using a manual IP address.

  1. Print a new Network Configuration Page.

  2. Locate the URL(s) for Embedded Web Server address.

SKIP to step 11: Click here

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.
