Deskjet 1050, Model #J410a
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm having problems with my HP Deskjet 1050's scanner. When I go to scan something, it works (as far as it going through it's usual steps), but, when the scan is finished, the result is a page completely covered over so what you actually scanned is illegible. You can just barely make out bits of what you wanted to scan, underneath the coating that is now on top. I had no problems with this All-in-One (from the time I purchased it) until after I accepted Microsoft's free offer and they downloaded their Windows 10 OS on my computer. I'm not sure if my scanner was immediately effected (since I didn't use it right away) after this OS change and, it didn't effect it's printing operation because I did use the printer right away, and many times since (and it is still working fine). However, even though the printer works great, there is just one problem with it, which is caused by the scanner not working, and that is I can no longer align it after inserting a new ink cartridge. This does cause me a little frustration since, every time I print something, I have to see the pop up box that tells me to align my printer, which I always click "no". But, that is livable. Not having the ability to scan anything is "not" livable and I really hope you can help me to fix this. Also, I did try using the HP Print and Scan Doctor and trouble shooting, but, both of those just went through their check steps which resulted in both of them telling me my scanner was working fine. And, as I said above, it "does work" (when it comes starting up when you click scan and, finishing the scan process to the end), but, it's once the scan is complete, the resulting page is useless since it has an almost solid overlay of....I'm not sure how to explain what the overlay is. Please help!

Well, I followed the instructions of the link you provided to help fix my scanner, but, it "did not" work. Your link took me to where I could download the current software and driver for my specific printer, which I did. When I went to install it, then, connect it with my existing printer, even though the box said at the top I could use this to either connect a new printer or, make adjustments/fixes to my existing printer, the only link provided to click on was for connecting a "new printer". So, before proceeding, I uplugged and disconnected my printer and then, went into my programs and uninstalled all of it's software. Once done, I went back to this open box and then clicked on the "connect a new printer" link. It had me turn back on the printer, then, connect it to my computer, which I did. But, after it went through it's processes, suddenly the window opens and says that I currently do not have a printer for this software. Yet, it had to have somehow connected with my printer since I tried to see if it would work when I clicked print, and, it did. Plus, it showed the ink levels of my printer, etc. So, why did the new software install without finding it's target printer it was supposed to go with? Or, since it said it didn't connect with my printer, why, then, did my printer work when it's original software had been uninstalled? And, yes, I did go ahead and try to see if my scanner was fixed, but, nope. It still had the same issue which was that the scanner works (when you click scan, it turns on and you can hear it go through the entire scan), but, when the finished picture comes up for preview, it is completely covered with these thick, different colored lines going down vertically on the page and these lines are within a solid medium gray color that also completely covers the page. With all of this overlay, you can just barely make out some of what is scanned on the page. It is absolutely horrible!!! And, it used to work perfectly until I downloaded Windows 10. That's when the scanner no longer produced a quality scan, yet, everything else on the printer worked (oh, except my ability to align the printer since to do so, you have to scan the printed page that automatically shoots out for alignment. Since I can no longer do a readable scan, every time I go to print something, a box opens that tells me to align the page and I have to click "do not align". This is before each and every print job.) I still need help!

Hello, @Deedre103

Thanks for the reply & appreciate your efforts 🙂

Going through your post, it looks like a scanner mechanism issue with the printer. This normally occurs due to some power related issues on the printer.

I first want you to perform a power drain on the printer and then make a photocopy to check. Here are the steps:

·         With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

·         Remove USB cable, if present.

·         Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

·         Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

·         Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now, I need to know whether the printer can make a "Photocopy" or not.

Place a document face down on the scanner glass and press the copy option on the printer control panel. Let me know if it makes a good copy or not.

If the copy comes out fine, then try scanning again.

Thanks, I'll watch for your reply!

Good luck 🙂
