Hi! @joyce1978, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!
I understand you have issues scanning from the tray on your printer.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Please try the steps recommended below.
Perform a power reset
Follow these steps in the order presented to reset the printer.
Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Refer this article to further troubleshoot ADF Paper Jam Error Displays.
Also, try opening and closing the tray 10 times and check if it helps.
Let me know how it goes!
Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂

I have tried suggested remedies. It still states: Scanner lid or document feeder open. which they are not. Also it states to
push in the green tab, and I don't have a green tab. I can scan from the bottom but not from the tray.

Hey there! @joyce1978, It's great to hear from you again, I was very much waiting for your response.
I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.
As you mentioned even after trying out the steps the issue still persists.
It looks like the ADF is faulty, please contact HP phone support and get the service options.
Link to contact HP.
However, you can use the flatbed scanner as an alternate for scanning.
Hope you have a great day ahead!
Take Care! 🙂
