HP Deskjet F2050
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Good Morning Everyone,

I am using a HP Deskjet 2050, together with a Win 10 notebook (MSI GF 75 Thin). The printer is connected by USB to the notebook and always worked well. Suddenly, a couple of days ago, It stopped printing (in the printer queue the printer was shown as offline). So I uninstalled the driver and tried to reinstall it, however it did not work. Whenever the pc tries to connect by USB, it actually registers the USB connection, but then shows a connection fail, as if there was a problem with the USB connection at the printer:

1) I connected to several different USBs on the notebook, as well as via OTG cable to my Xiaomei Redmi Note 8 cellphone (via the hp print plugin), but nothing connects.

2) However, I then tried to connect at another (older) Win 10 notebook and the printer works without any problem. Later we tested it on a desktop pc (also Win 10) and it also works fine.

So I can safely conclude that the problem is not with the printer, but with my own MSI notebook (in case of my smartphone it is probably a compatibility issue with Android, so I rather do not consider this).

What could be the cause of the problem? As I wrote, I tried all different USB ports without result (I should add that with other peripherals like mouse, Harddiscs ec. they work absolutely fine, and the printer does react to the USB connection during install, it just shows then a connection fail).

I also used several different usb cables - without success.

If anyone has an idea I would be grateful for any assistance.

Thank you and best regards,

Andreas

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that you are getting driver installation fail error, I am glad to assist you.

Did you uninstall the printer driver from root level, before installing the new driver?

If not. follow these steps:-

Perform root level uninstallation to remove all the printer related software's.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • Restart the PC again.

Download and install the printer using HP full feature driver:

Hello Sandytechy20,

thank you for your very detailed reply - much appreciated!

I followed the instructions to the letter, however after having done that, the error still occurs, that is during the driver installation process the pc attempts to connect by USB (he recognizes the USB when I plug in the cable), then he "searches" for like 5 seconds, and finally the error screen (I am not sure whether you could see the screenshot) appears (the symbol of the computero n thel eft, the printer on the right and in the middle a white "x" on red background). Are there other things that I could try? Or might this be a genuine incompabitility between the printer and my pc (which maybe was introduced by a recent windows update)?

UPDATE: I think I identified the problem, but I still don´t know how to solve it. It seems that the USB Printer Port is not available or being recognized. When I go to Printer and Scanner, and then scroll down to printing server options, and then to the tab "ports",  it does not show any USB port. If I then click on "add" ("printing ports"), it still does not show any usb (only LPR Port, PDF Architect Monitor, pdfcmon and wondershare pdfelement Monitor - the later three being programs). I did leave the printer connected to the pc and restarted Windows (as it was recommended on some sites), but it still didn´t solve the issue.

Cheers,
