I am sick of problems with this stupid HP Smart Tank! Does it have to be so complicated?
The last several days the printer has continually been offline, and I cannot get it fixed. I've turned off and turned back on the computer and printer and router multiple times. I've tried removing the printer, and the only one that my computer recognises to add is "Direct", which works for printing but not for scanning. Even the stupid HP Smart App does not recognise any printer to add. I HAVE to scan documents for my work NOW. Can you help me, please?

Hi @Tracyyy,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating printer issues can be, especially when you need it for work. Let's try a few troubleshooting steps to get your HP Smart Tank 750 All-In-One connected to Wi-Fi and working properly for both printing and scanning.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
1. Restart Devices
You've already tried restarting your computer, printer, and router. Ensure that they are fully powered off for at least 30 seconds before turning them back on.
2. Check Wi-Fi Connection
Make sure your printer and computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The printer should not be connected to a "Direct" network if you need scanning functionality.
3. Reconnect Printer to Wi-Fi
Follow these steps to reconnect your printer to your Wi-Fi network:
Reset Network Settings on the Printer:
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to the network settings.
- Look for an option to restore network settings or reset the wireless settings.
- Confirm and wait for the reset to complete.
Reconnect to Wi-Fi:
- Use the printer’s control panel to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
- Navigate to the wireless setup menu and follow the prompts to select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
4. Reinstall HP Smart App
Sometimes, the software might need a fresh installation:
- Uninstall the HP Smart App from your computer.
- Download the latest version of the HP Smart App from the HP website.
- Install the app and follow the on-screen instructions to add your printer.
5. Add Printer Manually
If the printer still doesn’t appear in the HP Smart App, try adding it manually:
- Open the HP Smart App.
- Click on the "+" sign to add a new printer.
- Follow the instructions to connect to the printer manually by entering the printer's IP address. You can find the IP address on the printer’s control panel under network settings.
6. Update Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date:
- Open the HP Smart App.
- Go to the printer settings.
- Check for firmware updates and install any available updates.
7. Check Router Settings
Ensure that your router is not blocking the printer:
- Access your router’s settings page (usually by entering the router's IP address in a web browser).
- Look for any settings related to MAC address filtering or network security that might block the printer.
- Add the printer’s MAC address to the list of allowed devices if needed.
8. Temporary Connection for Scanning
As a temporary measure, you can use a USB connection for scanning:
- Connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable.
- Open the HP Smart App and add the printer via USB.
- Use the app to scan documents until the Wi-Fi issue is resolved.

I was eventually able to resolve the problem on my own, but I thank you for your gracious response and thorough suggestions. And I apologise for my pejorative manner of expression in referring to the SmartTank and HP Smart app as 'stupid'. (Though I still do not like being forced to use the app and having to register and having to re-sign in every so often and not being able to choose settings manually with the printer--I greatly miss the older printers.)
