An expired warranty does not necessarily indicate that you were sold a used product. It is also possible that you purchased an older model and if you failed to register the warranty will be based on date of manufacture not sale date and often this results in products appearing to a short or no warranty.  It may also depend on the vendor that sold you the product. If you did not purchase the product direct from HP then your complaint should be taken to the vendor first. HP does have a warranty dispute process that you will want to investigate first to see if the warranty dates can be updated to match your date of purchase. A bill of sale will be the only thing you need.
