@eCoach,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

That is very impressive -26 years of service from your loyal HP printer!

For very old HP printers such as the HP LaserJet M1740 (likely from the early 2000s), HP no longer provides a dedicated Windows 11 driver. However, you can still try installing the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD), which supports many legacy LaserJet models and usually works fine on newer Windows versions.

  1. Download the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6 – 64-bit version.

  2. Run the installer, then select either:

    • Dynamic Mode (for easy detection via USB/network), or

    • Traditional Mode (if the printer is always connected to the same PC).

  3. If the installer doesn't detect the printer automatically, you can manually add it via
    Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device → Add manually → "The printer that I want isn’t listed."

If the Universal Driver doesn't work (some pre-USB or parallel-port models are too old), you can try adding the printer manually using a Windows built-in driver:

  1. Choose Add a local printer → Use an existing port (e.g., LPT1).

  2. Then pick HP from the manufacturer list and select a similar model (e.g., HP LaserJet 4, 5, or 6P).
    Those generic drivers often still print fine in basic mode.

In Short:

Start with the HP Universal Print Driver (PCL6). If that doesn't work, try a Windows built-in HP LaserJet 4/5 driver -those usually revive even decades-old printers under Windows 11.

Kind Regards,
