Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Scan function is inoperable when selecting "scan" thru Preview or Image Capture app on MacBook (Mojave). Screen on printer displays "Scanning", but fails to scan the document. App on MacBook waits while scanning fails to begin. Scan hardware doesn't move. Printer is wireless connected and print function works. I have printed documents followed by trying to scan a document, only to fail.

@JaggerPass, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Let us try these steps to check if the Scanner component is working fine.

Try making a standalone copy and check if it works.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Check the scanner bar functionality

Perform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed.

  1. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.
  2. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.

If the scanner light does not move or moves halfway or is not lit, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed/broken.

Let me know how this goes.

Update 10/5: Continue to have intermittent scan failures.

  • Continue having problems scanning from iOS Image Capture and HP Easy Scan. This morning tried to scan using HP Easy Scan. Printer entered scan mode as observed by scrolling bars on printer, however, scan light bar never moved and scan didn’t start. Hit cancel button on printer, but mode never cancelled while scrolling bars continued. Had to unplug printer.  Scan feature always functions the first time after unplugging printer from power source (wall) and restarting printer. This problem regularly occurs the first time trying to scan after starting computer and waking printer from sleep mode.

Note, printer is connected thru home Wi-Fi network. Confirmed Wi-Fi is working.

  • Started to follow the directions provided. Download latest firmware. Opened application and ran HP Firmware Updater. This error message appears when selecting device name and selecting continue, "Device is in error state and cannot be reflashed because of this. Resolve the problem and try again." Neither HP Utility or printer show an error message. I am able to print test page from HP Utility app. I believe printer has latest firmware because network configuration page reports firmware as NBP1CN1831AR.

          Any suggestions for next step?
