HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

Every scan creates a one-inch thick black streak about the same size as the band you see through the glass. I've watched the videos and proceeded through all of the options. Nothing has worked!  I've had it for just over a year!

Hi @jasokle,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to have this issue persist despite trying various troubleshooting steps. Here are some additional steps you can try to resolve the black streak issue with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw.

  • Clean the scanner glass: Use a soft, lint-free cloth and glass cleaner to thoroughly clean the scanner glass. Ensure there are no smudges, fingerprints, or debris on the glass surface.
  • Inspect the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder): If you're using the ADF for scanning, check the underside of the ADF for any debris, such as tape residue or ink smudges. Clean the ADF rollers and separator pad if necessary.
  • Check the scanner lid and hinges: Make sure the scanner lid is securely closed and the hinges are not obstructed. Sometimes, if the lid is not properly closed, it can cause scanning issues.
  • Update printer firmware: Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, firmware updates include fixes for scanning issues.
  • Perform a factory reset: This should be done as a last resort. Performing a factory reset will revert all settings back to their default values. Instructions for performing a factory reset can usually be found in the printer's user manual or on the HP support website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Alden.  Although I appreciate the detail, none of these potential solutions resolved this issue. I'm not experiencing a smudge, so cleaning the glass didn't work. It's a thick, black, one-inch line.

The line appears whether I'm using the ADF or the glass, so it doesn't have anything to do with the feeder.

The firmware is up to date. I performed a factory reset. And the lid and hinges work well.

I did pay an extra $20 simply to speak to someone in support, and that person was also unable to resolve the issue. Even though my machine is just over a year old, it looks like I got a lemon.
