Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Laserjet 1536dnf MFP
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

My Uncle has HP Laserjet 1536dnf MFP. We recently upgraded to Windows 11 home from Windows 10 Home.

After upgrading to Windows 11, scanner was not working, So we downloaded latest full software (1530) and installed it.

Upon installation, which is direct USB type i.e. we use USB cable to communicate with printer, the scan icon disappeared

I checked in start button and unlike in windows 10, there was no HP Scan App. We scan using this app and now it is missing.

We tried various methods like installing in compatibility mode for Windows 8 and Windows 7 (with admin rights) as recommended by Windows troubleshooter.

Restarted PC after each uninstall and reinstall. Nothing worked.

We also installed HP doctor. It also shows the cross mark over Scan icon, but has tick mark over WIA icon and other icons on the left.

Printing is working fine. I can scan using MS paint, but HP does not install scanner software.

Upon searching on net, I have found out that there are compatibility issues in Windows 11

https://support.hp.com/us-en/help/windows-10-support-center?jumpid=in_r11839_us_en_WIN11_support_glo...

I have also seen the thread

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-Copying/Scanner-not-found-since-installing-Windows-11-...

I have not implemented the tips. First thing I wish to know is that does anyone have the similar issue -

HP full software does not install Scan module?

During installation, HP Scan is ticked, but yet not installed, No desktop icon, and cannot find 'HP Scan' app in Windows Start Program list.

Our purpose is to simply scan docs as both images and pdfs.

For quick fix / stop gap solution - There are apps in Microsoft App store like Windows Scan, HP Scan and Capture and HP Smart.

Can I install any of the HP softwares from Microsoft App store?. Will it not clash with the already installed full software (which includes Scanner)

Or is it better to install Windows Scan?

Please help.

Thank you for going through my rambling!

Regards

Hello,

Just wanted to add the screenshot of HP Doctor

HP Doctor Scan Error 16-06-2022.jpg

Scanning is working with Windows Scan and HP Scan and Capture App. Both were installed from App store.

Windows Scan from App store is different from 'Windows Fax and Scan' native app. Simply type 'Scan' to find Windows Scan.

It has option for black and white PDF

I am yet to find B & W option in HP Scan App

Thank you.

Hi,
From the search bar type CMD, right-click on Command-Line and select Run as Administrator, be sure to confirm any prompt by pressing Yes.

Past the following command and press enter:

Sc config stisvc depend= rpcss/ShellHWDetection

Now restart your computer, this should resolve the WIA issue.

Next, install and try scanning using the HP Scan Extended program, it would appear within your Start menu:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Please let me know how it goes,
Shlomi

Hi,

Thank you for the suggestion.

I added ShellHWDetection through regedit as shown in the following thread

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-Copying/Scanner-not-found-since-installing-Windows-11-...

So along with rpcss the next line has ShellHWDetection

I verified it by going to

Start + R (cmd prompt) --> Services.msc --> Windows Image Acquisition (Double Click) --> dependencies Tab

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and Shell Hardware Detection are present

I admit, yours is a simple and faster way to add Shell Hardware Detection.

But after that I did not reinstall the printer. After uninstalling the program, I think I will have go to Printers and Scanners and uninstall / Remove the printers before freshly installing the software.

Since it is my uncle's PC, I will try to do it when I get opportunity.

Till then, I have installed Windows Scan and HP Scan and Capture from Microsoft Store in order to scan both images and pdfs with multiple pages.

btw, even my home PC, which I recently upgraded to Windows 11 does not have Shell Hardware Detection

I just need to ask one question: Does the Full Software install Scanner Software (but I cant see it).

I think there should be HP Scan app, but upon clicking on it will give an error. Something like 'Scanner not found'. But the module / app has to be installed as it is preselected along with other options like Fax, etc.

My question is - Was the scanner module installed? If Yes, why couldn't I locate it?

To add to it, it removed the Older HP Scan shortcut icon on desktop 😞

So is there any bug in the installer itself?

(Product is correctly identified during installation)

Thank you for the help and support. Appreciate it.

P.S. I have written a long response and have repeated the steps in brief as anyone visiting this thread will find all the references and pointers they need to troubleshoot.

Oh and I didn't run command prompt as Admin before running regedit. Will that cause the problem.

Thank you

HI @WhiteLotus1,

If you have done it from the Registry Editor you wouldn't have any issue if no error prompt was shown in the process, the Elevated privileges are required for the Command Line method only.

Please reinstall the software and check if it works,

If you experience the same please give HP Scan Extended a chance, it is a newer version of the HP Scan software and even have more options from my point of view.

Hi @ShlomiL,

Thank you for the help.

Due to personal issues, I am not able to work on my uncle's PC. We do not live in the same house.

I will let you know, if I get chance. My uncle is quite old fashioned as so if things are working then he would let things as they are.

Thanks again for the help and spending time.

Regards

WL
