HP Envy 5530
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I have an older model HP Envy 5530 that all of a sudden will no longer copy or scan a document. It just continues to spin saying scanning or copying document. It still prints from my work PC, my personal PC and my Apple cell phone with no problem,. Any ideas or is it just time to purchase a new printer.

Thank You

Hi @Madonnaj55

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Which application are you using to scan?

This could be an issue with the scanner mechanism in the printer. Let us try these steps:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Check the scanner bar functionality

Perform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed.

  1. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.
  2. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.

If the scanner light does not move or moves halfway or is not lit, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed/broken.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi

I had the same issue and read an archived post on here from 2018 - https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/hp-envy-5530-won-t-copy-or-scan/td-p/63770...

where someone suggested dropping the printer from a couple of inches and this had worked for some users. It sounded bonkers but I disconnected the printer from the mains power, waited a minute or two...dropped the printer onto my desk from 2 or 3 inches....reconnected the power, tried copying and now it works perfectly. Go figure?????

Hope this helps but do it safely.

Regards
