HP OJ 8600 Pro /N911a
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I use the front panel of my HP OJ8600 to initiate a scan, the process stops mid way and my computer displays a choice between HP Scan and Phtoto Shop Elements. If I choose HP Scan, the printer complete the process successfully.  I would like to eliminate the prompt, so that the scan completes without any manual input.  I had Photoshop Elements on my computer for a short time, but removed all traces of it, except for this artifact .  Is there any solution short or reinstalling the print driver? Maybe clear an entry in the Registry?

Hi @JimHarrison

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

This is not an issue with the HP printer drivers. As Adobe Photoshop Elements is/was also installed on the PC, it is intervening in the process.

I assume the Adobe application is not completely removed from the PC. Hence the prompt.

Go to Control panel > Add or remove programs > Check for Adobe and remove the same.

Also, refer to this document to know how to remove the application.

Once the application is completely uninstalled, you will not receive the prompt anymore.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for your suggestions.  Unfortunately, none of them worked.  The program was previously uninstalled  with Control Panel and every fragment that you suggested might still reside was not found on my computer including the registry entries.

Just to be very clear, when I press the scan button on my printer and choose to scan to a pdf, a small square window pops up.  the title block says HP_Officejet Pro 8600 USB,  Inside it says, HP_OJ8600_SCAN, then asks to "Select the program to launch for this action" and shows two printer icons the first says HP Scan with a repeat of the words directly below it, the second says Photoshop elements twice..  At the bottom is the OK and Cancel boxes.

In that case, let us try these steps:

Clean reinstallation of Pre-installed HP drivers

  1.  In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
  2.  Select your HP Printer
  3.  Select Uninstall
  4.  In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
  5.  In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
  6.  Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
  7.  Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  8.  Click on the “Drivers” tab
  9.  Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  10.  Select Ok
  11.  Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  12.  Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.

Click here to download the HP Full-featured driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Try scanning.

Let me know how this goes.
