Printing scanned material is ok, but copies are faded on half the sheet. It is about 6 years old, too expensive to repair or just buy a new one?

Do you get the same results from the ADF and the flat glass? If only the ADF, then it is likely the ADF mylar is dirty or damaged. It is a piece of thin plastic over the slit glass of the ADF scan path. It guides the paper so that it feeds properly. It is a replaceable item. If both flat glass and ADF are distorted, then likely there is an issue with the scanner. In your position I would try a factory reset first to see if that solves the issue.

Thanks for your help. I was having trouble with ADF and flat glass. I did do the factory reset and it was helpful. Copies are still a bit light but the whole page copies. I have tried non HP toner which may be the problem. But it is much more expensive than other name brand toners. When it finally dies, I may switch brands.
