My printer is not waking up from energy saver mode in order to receive faxes. The display lights up but the printer will not answer even though it is set on auto answer.

Hi @Sparrow_wings

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you. This seems like sleep mode issues on the printer.

Does the printer receive a fax automatically when it is not in sleep mode?

For now, let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Assign a static IP address to the printer

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  2. Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  3. If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  4. Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  5. Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  6. Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  7. Click on the radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Thank you for answering my query.

In truth I solved my own problem. I had plugged the telephone wire from the wall into the incorrect port on the back of the printer. Once that was corrected, the fax wakes up and receives.

Thank you.

While I thought I had solved my issue, in fact, it continues. What is strange is that the printer wakes up to receive faxes sporadically. Not always does it wake up.

I tried your suggested steps, but that disconnected my printer from the network. Is that what you were expecting?

In ant case please explain why you thought playing around with the wireless network settings would solve my issue. My printer has a phone cord plugged into the wall.

Which free fax service is better to use? Can you please help me about it?

HP Recommended

This is not a fax service. My issue regards receiving faxes (sent by other people) on my printer. My all-in-one printer had a feature that allows it to function as a fax machine.

@Sparrow_wings

In your first post, you have mentioned 'My printer is not waking up from energy saver mode', assigning a static IP address to the printer may resolve this issue. The printer should not disconnect from the network in this process.

If you have tried the steps and issue persists, I think this issue needs some additional technical assistance that can be better provided through one-on-one interaction with our HP Support team. I would request you to contact them for further assistance.

1) Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Select your product type below.

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Select the appropriate option based on your preference.

6) Fill the web-form and proceed further.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
