My computer and printer are far apart and often it is more convenient to use the "Scan to Computer" option on the printer. I just bought an 8020 Ink Jet and I cannot figure out how to get a pdf file. It sends these scans as a jpg. I can get a pdf from the HP Smart but that entails walking a city block!

Hi,
Download and install its Full Feature Software below, once the installation completes open your printer icon on the desktop, select Scan, click Manage Scan to Computer and enable the feature, then scan from the printer front panel by selecting your computer name only and PDF will be given as a choice there:

Thanks for trying but this solution did not work. Yes, I can control the scanner FROM my computer but if I go to the computer and go to Scan, Scan to Computer and select my computer it only scans from the glass and sends a jpg file to my computer. There is no choice of pdf file. This is very frustrating as I have to walk to the printer, load the document, walk back to my computer several rooms away, hit scan, walk back to the printer to retrieve the original document. I have gotten a message that the Scan to Computer is not active, but I cannot find how to activate it.

Please open the software and click on Manage Scan ti Computer.
Can you see the feature is enabled with a green ✅?
If the feature is enabled, you would see the computer name listed on top (e.g COMPUTER1) and this is tue EXACT name to select on the printer
From the printer front panel, be sure to select this exact name and not any similar (do not select Save to COMPUTER1 as an example).

I opened the program as you suggested and noted the Scan to Computer was enabled and gives the name of my computer as an option. That name is on the printer as part of the Scan to Computer menu. However, it still only scans as a jpg file when you try to initiate the scan from the printer, and does not scan anything loaded into the document feeder.
