HP Color Laser MFP 179fwg

I purchased an HP Color Laser MFP 179fwg. I have a Mac Book with Sonoma 14.1.1 installed on it.

I installed HP Smart to print and scan with my device. Printing works, but I can't scan. The printer shows up in HP Smart and its status is "ready", but when I click on "Printer scan" I get the message "Printer is not available".

I tried the following

- uninstall and reinstall HP Smart

- restart my Macbook

- connect the printer via wireless, then via USB

None of the above helped thus far. Any pointer would be appreciated to see how to troubleshoot this furhter.

Thank you

Hi @Thomas-1234,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the frustration you're facing with the scanning issue. Let's troubleshoot this problem step by step.

Verify Connection:

  • Ensure that your HP Color Laser MFP 179fwg is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your MacBook.
  • Check if the printer's firmware is up to date. You can usually find this information on the HP support website.

Use HP Easy Scan:

  • Instead of HP Smart, try using HP Easy Scan. This is a dedicated scanning application from HP that might work more effectively.
  • Download and install HP Easy Scan from the Mac App Store if you don't have it already.
  • Open HP Easy Scan and check if your printer is detected. Attempt a scan to see if it works.

Check System Preferences:

  • Open "System Preferences" on your MacBook.
  • Go to "Printers & Scanners."
  • Select your HP printer from the list and ensure that it's set as the default printer.
  • If your printer is not listed, try adding it by clicking the '+' button and selecting your printer from the available options.

Restart the Print Spooler:

  • Open the "Terminal" application on your MacBook.
  • Type the following command and press Enter:

sudo launchctl start org.cups.cupsd

  • Enter your administrator password when prompted.
  • After that, type:

sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd

  • Close the Terminal and try scanning again.

Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Ensure that there are no conflicting applications or firewall settings blocking communication between your MacBook and the printer.

Reinstall Drivers:

  • Go to the HP support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest drivers for macOS.
  • Install the drivers and restart your MacBook.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for the reply. HP Easy Scan is not available in my region (Finland), but I changed the default printer from "last used" to explicitly selecting the printer I'm using. I also run the commands you were suggesting (restart the print spooler). Now I am able to scan from HP Smart.

Unfortunately this is not seem to be working still. I was able to scan once. I was using the document feeder and scanned 4 pages without any problem. However for subsequent scans the scanner just starts, the page goes through the feeder, the printer indicates that it is "sending" the data and HP Smart shows "Scanning page 1", but it is stuck at this. I was waiting for couple of minutes to see if it can pass this stage. I also tried again to restart the print spooler, but it didn't help. I also restarted the printer and the my macbook. This didn't help either.

I'm wondering if a newer firmware is available for this printer. The currently installed one is v3.82.01.14. I didn't see any option for this model (MFP 179fwg) to install anything else on my Mac but HP Smart.

Any other pointer would be appreciated.
