Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Product: Officejet 5258

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am unable to communicate with my wireless HP Officejet printer (5258) through Wndows 10. Only this computer has the issue. I can connect to the printer with my HP Pavilion dv6 laptop and my iPad. The HP installation software enumerates the printer with the correct IP address but fails during the "Installing Network Device" phase. The computer and the printer are on the same wireless network and router. I can even ePrint to this printer!!! The HP doctor utility fails with the same error. I've tried rebooting the printer and the router. I even updated the printer firmware. The printer itself is within the warranty period. The issue seems to be local to my Window 10 computer but I can't see the issue. I even disabled the Windows Firewall in case that was somehow preventing the connection.

  • Do you have any security software/antivirus installed on your PC?

Let's try these steps:

Step 1: Try to restart the devices

  • Turn off the Wifi Router, wait for 60 seconds and turn it back on
  • Turn off the printer, wait for 60 seconds and turn it back on
  • Restart the computer

Step 2: If there are any security software/antivirus are installed, try disabling it and run the software installation again.

Proceed to the next step if this fails.

Step 3: Uninstall and re-install the printer driver.

  • In Windows, search for 'Control Panel' and open 'Programs' or 'Programs and features' and select 'Uninstall a Program'.
  • Select your HP Printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for 'Control Panel' and look for 'View devices and printers'option under 'Hardware and Sound'.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'.
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  • Click on the "Drivers" tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select Ok.
  • Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows.

It was supposedly solved by "Sandytechy20" or"@Raj1788" on 07-13-2018, however there is no record of it for me to go back on per your website. I contacted "Sandytechy20", but she told me to start this issue on the board again.

@Nijmegenaar,

Have you tried the above steps?

Also, try these steps:

Step 1: Check the services from Microsoft

  • Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
  • Type 'services.msc' in the Run dialog box and click ok.

  • A list of Microsoft services would show up.
  • Search for 'Function Discovery Provider Host' and 'Function Discovery Resource Publication' services
  • The status of these services should be 'running'
  • If the services are not running, right click on the service and select 'Start'
  • Try the installation again.
  • If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Try adding the printer using a TCP/IP port

    • Obtain the IP address of the printer by touching the wireless iconhttps://lithium-response-prod.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/hpcsc.response.lithium.com/RESPONSEIMAGE/bbb7f8f0-71d2-4381-973c-54b5e353eac9.default.jpg on the printer control panel.
    • Go to Windows Start and search for 'Control Panel'
    • Under Control Panel, go to > Devices and Printers (under Hardware and Sound)
    • Delete the existing printers. (Right click on the printer icon > Remove Device)
    • Click on 'Add a Printer' at the top.
    • In the following dialogue box, select 'The printer that I want isn't listed'
    • Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.
    • Enter the IP address of the printer
    • Click next, follow the on-screen instructions to complete adding the printer.
  • Try printing.

You can also try installing the HP Smart app for Windows, which would also give you the ability to print/scan etc. from the application.

Atharva_gp thanks for your suggestions,

I have gone through these processes  several times without success. I may add that the printer is working correctly with my HP laptop running win 10, concluding that the problem lies with the desktop computer. This problem has apparently been resolved in the past  by “Sandytechy20” on 07-13-2018. I tried to recover that issue by going through your previous listings, but it apparently it was solved in a “private message” (talking about job security). I contacted her, but she is unwilling to provide me with the solution, but suggesting that I post this problem all over again on the forum. I'm surprised, but I guess it’s a great way of wasting  time if one is into that kind of thing, however I do appreciate, and want to thank you for  your time and efforts to resolve this issue.

Thank you for your efforts. I followed your suggestions, but without having success. Both the printer and scanner icons appear on the desktop, but when I click on either one of them it says “ The HP OfficeJet 5200 was not found”

@Nijmegenaar,

It's a very unique issue since the printer works on other PC and it's having an issue with one PC.

Let's try this:

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer by touching the Wireless icon
  • Open a Web browser
  • Type the IP address on the address bar of the browser and hit the enter key.

  • This should open the EWS page of the printer

  • Go to the 'Tools' menu and select 'Print Self Test Page'
  • Check if that prints.

Also, try the PING test

  • Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
  • Type cmd and hit ok

  • A command prompt window(black screen) would open up
  • Type "ping the IP address of your printer" for example: "ping 192.168.1.3" and hit the enter key.
  • run the ping test and share the results

I did get the EWS page. The Ping test worked (the ping result was 30ms). I was able to print the "Printer Status Report". However, when I try to print from the computer (for example Word document page). I get a message that the printer is not connected.

@Nijmegenaar,

Try these steps:

Step 1: Windows Update

You can try Updating Windows. Some of the updates could fix the issue.

  • Press the Windows button.
  • Type and search for Windows Update.
  • Select 'Check for updates

Step 2: Run SFC

  • System File Checker (SFC) is a utility in Microsoft Windows that allows users to scan for and restore corruptions in Windows system files.

  • On the windows start menu search for a program called 'command prompt'
  • Right click on the app and select 'Run as Administrator'

  • When the command prompt opens, enter 'sfc /scannow' and press Enter.

  • The repair process will now start. Don’t close Command Prompt or interrupt the repair process. The repair process can take a while, so wait patiently while it completes.
  • When the SFC scan is complete, the Command Prompt might state, “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” If that’s the case, restart Windows.
  • Re-install the printer driver from this link.
  • Try to print again.

Let me know what happens.
