Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283dfw
Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite

The scanner on my Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283dfw is frozen. I recently upgraded my printer and scanner. I normally can only use the hardware with the Mac Preview software for scanning and copying. Now when I open the scanner and place a document on the reader, it freezes on the "overview scan" and doesn't offer any options for set up other than cancel, which does not help. Occasionally, it will unfreeze after about 30 minutes and finally display my one page, which makes it impossible to scan multiple pages. I have the scan settings on b&w 75 dpi and scan to pdf but no luck. I've tried hard reboot. I've tried searching the web for answers. I've tried feeding the sheets nothing happens. As far as I can tell, the scanner is defective. I've tried calling the HP "help" line to absolutely no avail. Frankly, I'm not sure why HP still has a phone help service that's useless and takes hours. I'm on the verge of returning the product since it's still under warranty and will probably not get another HP.

Welcome to the HP support community.

Perform a power reset

  1. Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  5. Plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet and printer without any surge protector.
  6. Turn on the printer.

Update the printer firmware
