Hi!
I'm trying to scan with my new printer LaserJet MFP M28-M31 using Linux but I always get this error when scanning using SANE:
error: SANE: Error during device I/O (code=9)
I've installed hplip hplip-plugins and any other dependencies listed in hp-check but without luck.
these are the logs:
hp-scan log with sane debug enabled
any hints?

I got the same problem no matter wich scan-software I'm using. I've even tried the latest HPLIP 3.19.1 so far but it got nowhere. Seems the plugin is bugged.
Printing works fine though.
Have you solved your Problem?

Same here:
Linux pi4 4.19.75-1-MANJARO-ARM #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Sep 24 18:49:07 UTC 2019 aarch64 GNU/Linux
hplip Version : 3.19.8
This has been going on for WAY too long...and although Ubuntu says it was fixed on hp-lip version 3.19.6 ;
it seems to have reverted back to it's old behavior with a later version.
(Also it is reported that HP does not list a fix so far.....)
Altogether this is means I will be returning the printer. Sigh....

Same problem here (yet again). It worked for some time. Unfortunately I was not aware this most annoying problem returned until just recently - i tried to scan beeing in a hurry... HP - never again.
