I have a z640 and I've used the onboard Intel RAID controller to create a mirrored pair. It's working well, but I'd like to monitor the drives so I know if one has failed and should be replaced. Is there some way I can do that, say via SNMP or monitoring the Windows event logs?

If you install Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST):
When you run the GUI, click Preferences, there are email settings to send emails on storage system information/warnings/errors. Also, you will get balloon messages that appear down by the systray. You can select to always show the iastor icon on the windows taskbar. A green check is good, yellow triangle is degraded, red is failed.
If you prefer Windows event logs, you can monitor Application event logs for events from the event source IAStorDataMgrSvc (IAStorDataMgrSvc is a service installed by Intel RST). You will need to filter on the event data for Failed or Degraded to narrow down to storage system errors only.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. You were right about the ability to set up email alerts and/or create event log entries with those tools. I also found a third option: CIM. The Intel RSTe toolset includes a program called SetupCIM.exe, which when installed gives one the ability to query WMI to find out the configuration and status of the RAID array.
