Restarting my sprocket studio after along period of no use, I am trying to insert the ink cartridge.
It is blocked by the roll at the bottom.

How can I push this one down without damaging the printer or the cartidge?

Thanks for any advice

Hi @VBou

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for describing the situation so clearly—it’s understandable to feel cautious when reactivating your Sprocket Studio after a long break. The roll you're seeing is part of the photo paper ribbon system, and it can sometimes shift slightly during storage, making cartridge insertion tricky. Let’s walk through a safe way to reset the mechanism and insert the ink cartridge without causing damage.

Step-by-step guide to safely insert the ink cartridge

1. Power Off and Open the Printer

  • Turn off the Sprocket Studio and unplug it.
  • Open the top cover fully to access the cartridge bay.

2. Inspect the Ribbon Roll

  • The roll at the bottom is part of the photo paper ribbon.
  • Gently check if the roll is seated properly in its track.
  • If it’s slightly raised or misaligned, use two fingers to gently press it down into place—do not force it.

3. Advance the Ribbon Manually

  • On the side of the ribbon cartridge, there’s usually a small gear or wheel.
  • Rotate it slowly to advance the ribbon a few millimeters—this can help realign the roll and lower its profile.

4. Insert the Ink Cartridge

  • With the ribbon seated and advanced, slide the ink cartridge in at a slight angle, then press gently until it clicks into place.
  • Ensure it’s flush and secure before closing the cover.

5. Power On and Run a Test Print

  • Plug in and power on the printer.
  • Use the HP App to send a test photo or status page.
  • Confirm that the cartridge is recognized and printing begins smoothly.

6. Refer to the user manual below for more details:

If the roll remains stuck or resists movement, remove the ribbon cartridge entirely, inspect for any warping or tension issues, and reseat it carefully. Avoid using tools or excessive pressure—everything should move with light fingertip force.

Let me know how the insertion goes—I’ll guide you further if needed.
