I have HP Stream 7 tablet with 32gb storage plus additional 32gb SD card also. The Get Windows 10 app in system tray says ready to upgrade. But does this device have enough storage to do the update?

Hello acpcola,
Yes your Stream 7 will upgrade to Windows 10 just fine.
I highly suggest that you copy all your files you wish to keep onto another drive.
I use a Micro SD card in the slot provided.
Then you can erase the files on the C drive to give you more space.
After you complete the upgrade, you can point your default data folders over to the Micro SD card to continue storing your data there. This will keep the available free space clear for other stuff like OS Updates and such.

You can also install programs to a folder in your Micro SD card to help maintain free space if you need.
Once Windows 10 has upgraded and updated and you decide to keep Windows 10, you can remove the Windows Old folder that has the Windows 8.1 files stored for reverting.
To do this, use Windows Disk Cleanup utility. This will free up more space.
Do both for Delete Files and Delete System Files in the instructions.

Will I need to plug in an additional storage device mid way through this update? Right now I only have about 6gb free space on c: drive, but 29gb available on SD card. I don't have an adapter that will plug a USB flash drive into the micro USB charging port on this device, and haven't been able to find one anywhere. Do I need extra space before starting this?

Again, If you have any Documents, Photos, etc. on the tablet, move them to a micro SD card and delete them on the C drive to free up space.
You will need at least 12 GB of free space on the C drive.
Delete what you have to, to free up space including any third party programs you may have installed.
Also...
Run Disk Cleanup on your system to free up any temp files, etc. This will help free up space also.
Run both Delete Files and Delete System Files from the instructions here...

Then you can start the Upgrade process from your desktop with this utility...
Download the utility and install it.
Then run the utility and choose to Upgrade This PC.
It will download Windows 10 and install it.
You must UPGRADE the tablet first this way before you can clean install Windows 10 later if needed.
It will be a good idea to purchase a USB OTG adapter and a 4 port hub in case you have troubles with the Touch screen or if you need to do a Clean Install later. This way, you can use a USB drive, wired keyboard and mouse.
This is not mandatory for the upgrade, but good to have just in case.
You can buy them very cheap online at many stores.

and
