Hello, I can probably guess you get this question a lot, but I still can't find a solution to the problem.

My HP-50G calculator wont turn on at all. I've tried replacing the AAA batteries and the backup battery, but nothing changed. I used a paperclip to press the reset button. I tried to press both left and right arrows  of the calculator and pressing the ON button.  If you try to plug it into a computer, the windows tone that it detected a device plays, but it says the device couldn't be recognized. In the Device Manager, it's listed as an unknown USB device. I tried to uninstall the connectivity kit, uninstall the driver, and then reinstall everything, but that didn't work.

My guess is that I somehow corrupted something while fidgeting around adding programs and stuff using the connectivity kit.  I can't reinstall the ROM, because you apparently must use the calculator to get onto XSERV.

Any ideas what my next course of action should be? I have an exam tomorrow, and would enjoy using this instead of my scientific calculator, haha.

Hi!, dmonking:

Welcome, to Forum!.

1) If have installed any SD (secure digital) or microSD, with holder, remove it.

2) Try, with the cable connector USB-mini usb, in PC, net or notebook.

3) Too, with any cellular phone charger, with USB-mini usb connection, without batteries (AAA). If run, check the terminal of batteries, by dust. Clean with pharmaceutical alcohol (99%). Disconnect the charger and try again, with batteries.

4) If not run, IMHO is a problem of IC (motherboard). Consult then, with the Techincal Representative, most near, to your home.

Hello Miguel,

Unfortunately, none of your solutions worked. The calculator will still not turn on. :smileysad:

Looks like I'll have to call the tech support soon. i'll make sure to KUDOs you anyways for trying to help.

Hi!, dmonking:

Try with ...

Contrast.JPG

If it still, will not start, it is likely that the ON, has some dirt obstructing for contact, by pressing the key. If under warranty, bring her, but and if you dare to open it to see, writes.

Note: Thank you, by the KUDOS.

I have a very similar problem except that my hp 50g WILL turn on only if it's plugged into a usb connected to computer.  It worked fine the last time I used it.  The batteries were really low and I turned it on.the screen did some lines moving up and back down the screen then it shut off.

I replaced the batteries and it wouldn't turn on.  Found this post and tried a usb cable and it turns on right away..without pressing any buttons at all actually.

Any ideas?

Hi!, xpalemoonx:

Welcome, to forum!.

Try using a battery charger of smartphone, that has output connector micro USB, p.e. (Motorola W3, L6I or others). If it works, it is likely have drawbacks in the terminals, of the batteries. Check continuity in connections of batteries and/or  Clean properly. If it does not recognize the charger, then we must think in a failure of the printed circuit board (IC).
Kind Regards !.

I had similar problem some time ago.

My 50g was lying with a heavy book on it 🙂 for a few days. The backup and main batteries were completely drained.

After changing batteries 50g didn't start.

So I took my another 50g (it is good to have a few 🙂 and put aside the broken one.

The next day I tried to put on the broken 50g again, but it didn't start.

So I took off all the batteries and put 50g on the shelf.

The next day I made the last try. I said aloud "if you won't start I'll throw you away through the window" and put in the batteries. And bingo! the broken 50g awoke! And is working perfectly till now!.

And it is not a joke, as it may look 🙂

Hi!, andy11:

A good practice is that if you go to have your calculator for idle time is that you take out the batteries previously saved settings in the SD (secure digital <= 2Gb.), if you have one installed, or flash memory, which is not deleted. The configuration, you can create it in the HOME through the STARTUP command.

Kind Regards !.

I found nowhere in manuals that 50g can be powered from a charger via USB, is it safe for the calculator?

I am afraid to test it.

I am using only recharge accus (eneloops), can they be charged in the 50g via USB? It would be nice if so.

I guess that the charger should provide 5 or 6V, and at least 500mA

Thank you Make.

BTW, what so terrible have you done that you were banned by HP?

Hola !, andy11:

You can use, without damage, in the HP50G, with any battery charger of cellular phone, Motorola W3, L6I, or HP iPAQ 910c Smartphone, with connector miniUSB, with ...

Input    : 100/240 VAC - 200 mA. - 50 / 60Hz. - 13 / 20VA

Output : 5 V DC - 1A.
