HP Envy
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hello,

Lately, my laptop has tried to update itself whenever I start it. This would not be a problem if it did not take as long as it does to do so, then reveal the updates "could not be completed" so the changes are to be "undone." The screen states not to shut off my laptop, but I have no other choice to sometimes, such as if I need to close it for whichever reason, or if I am in desperate need to access information for schoolwork. There have been times where I have patiently waited for an hour or two, or have left and come back to my laptop, and the blue screen is still present.

Please help me with this!

Thank you.

@kraefredricks

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an HP Envy laptop and the Windows updates fail and there is a message stating that it's undoing the changes. However, the message is stuck on the undoing changes and due to this, you're unable to use the laptop. I appreciate your patience and will do my best to fix the issue.

I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Please download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter as this fixes issues with the Windows updates.
  • Please try to initiate the Windows updates.
  • Open Windows Update by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, by pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), then selecting Settings Change PC settings.
  • Select Update and recovery Windows Update.
  • Try to install Windows Updates again.

If the issue persists then you may perform the steps as described in detail from this link

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know how it goes. Good luck! 🙂

Hi, MKazi,

Thank you so much for your detailed assistance, but unfortunately I'm not sure if this problem is fixed. After I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter not all issues were resolved. As given by my device:

Problems found:

Problems installing recent updates - Not fixed

Service registration is missing or corrupt - Fixed

Windows Update error - Fixed

The Windows Update is now telling me "You're set to automatically install updates. We found new updates today, and we'll install them for you soon. We'll continue to check daily for new updates." I'm not sure if this has always stated this or not.

Underneath that I can "view details" or "check now."

Instead of "Never" being stated next to "Most recent check for updates," the time I just did this now displays on my screen. However, "Never" is still stated next to "Updates were installed."

Should my laptop be on board with updates the next time I do this? How exactly do I install these updates? Is it just the next time I restart my laptop? Also, how long should they take?

Thank you!

Hi @kraefredricks,

I am the The_Fossette. It looks like you were interacting with @MKazi, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

You can manually install the updates or else the updates get installed automatically when you restart the computer.

You can just click on install updates and the updates will be downloaded and installed on your computer.

Hope that answers your question.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care.

Cheers!
