Stream 8
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I've had this Stream 8 tablet for a while, although it hadn't been used for a few months.  When I booted it up last though, it had an issue where the touchscreen was registering multiple points at a time-from the screen feedback it looked like 5 or 6 in a line (row/column) based on where I touched the screen.  It doesn't seem to be consistent-on a fresh boot it might be OK, but after a while, it'll start failing.  So far I've tied the following:

  • Updated to windows 10 v 1809-no change
  • Reset the PC to factory (using internal "reset this PC" feature)-no change
  • Reinstalled all the drivers from the HP website (chipset, touchscreen driver)-no change
  • installed BIOS and firmware updates from HP website-no change

I've also gotten into the hardware diagnostic menu (found a reference to that here), and tried the touchscreen tests, which passed. I tried leaving the tablet powered on in this menu for 20 mins or so, and then the failure reproed in the hardware test.  Touching one point on the screen cleared multiple blocks, especially if I held it for a second.

Is there anything that can be done for this, or is it just a sign that the screen is dead, and the tablet needs replacing?

Good job with your thorough troubleshooting.  I was going to suggest reproducing the problem in the BIOS setup menu to rule out a Windows issue and you have already done that.  Since the issue is there as well as Windows, I would suspect a hardware problem, I have not seen this issue mentioned here before for the Stream tablet.  I myself own a Stream 7.

You have already updated the BIOS firmware which I would think resets the BIOS but you might also try a BIOS reset by powering it up while holding the volume up and volume down buttons together.

Also, if you let the battery run completely down, it will reset the CMOS so I would try that also if you haven't already.

Thanks for the suggestions-I hadn't tried a BIOS reset yet, but running that didn't seem to have any effect.  At a cold boot of the tablet, the hardware test passed, but after 10-15 mins, I started getting the multiple touch points registered (this was just leaving it at the hardware diag screen, so no additional software being loaded).  This leads me to believe it's hardware related, and maybe thermal (since it only seems to manifest after a period of being powered on)?  I'm pretty sure that there's not much that can be done at this point, but I'd be curious to know if others have had the same problem, and if there's anything that might solve it and make the tablet useable again.
