For me, the following command did not work to set brightness:
xrandr --output DSI1 --brightness .7
The output device should NOT be DSI1 but DSI-1 with a dash, like this:
xrandr --output DSI-1 --brightness .7
Also, is there a way to put the Stream 7 to sleep under Ubuntu?

Yes, it looks like the output name has changed to "DSI-1". I just changed the instructions, thanks for the correction.
I have not tested the sleep mode much, I just hit Suspend on my Stream 7 and it seemed to go to sleep, the Wifi disconnected and the screen went gray although it was still partially backlit. When I pressed the power button, the display came back and the Wifi reconnected although the touchscreen no longer worked so it does not seem to be working completely.
