I can offer the following:

The fingerprint reader requires a fingerprint driver (software to interface the Operating System with the hardware built into the computer).

Computer, likely one of:

Open the Website Driver page for your computer

Make sure HP Drivers are installed.

For example, if there is a Chipset driver, ensure that driver is installed and current.

Also Important (when / if available for your OS and Hardware):

  • HP 3D DriveGuard Software
  • Intel Management Engine Components Driver

If the BIOS offers an Update, consider updating -- only update the BIOS when necessary, while attached to AC power, and when the description of the Update indicates the update is Critical OR that the update will provide a fix for an issue you are having on your computer.  All BIOS updates contain an element of risk -- be aware that even when you do everything correctly, BIOS updates can go sideways.

If the BIOS does not offer a "fingerprint" on / off, the hardware is always enabled.  Setting (availability) in BIOS depends on the hardware -- not every computer requires fingerprint "enable" in the BIOS.

For the fingerprint hardware:

Search /open catetory Driver-Keyboard, Mouse, and Input Devices

Download, save, and install the Synaptics (Validity) Fingerprint Sensor Driver (wording may vary)

After the driver is installed, Restart the computer and log in

After / When the Driver shows up the Device Manager, you can try setting up fingerprint logon.

PIN assignment is mandatory to enable fingerprint reader.

            Windows key > Settings > Account > Sign-in Options > PIN number

  • Windows Hello and the Windows fingerprint logon

Help / How-to:

Add or Remove Fingerprint logon - Windows 10

After the Windows fingerprint logon works, consider adding (optional) software to save websites / passwords.

Category Software - Security

Name of Software HP Client Security Manager

BE AWARE:  Spare key / Disk Encryption is NOT necessary to run Client Security Software.  Do NOT add Spare Key / Disk encryption to your computer unless and until you fully understand the setup.

Thanks for attempting to help. Unfortunately installing the additional drivers did not help. The device still does not appear in the device manager.

HP support wants me to ship my tablet back to them for repair. I am unwilling to do that as I have had this for less than a week and I don't want to wait for a replacement.

I'm think I'll just return it to the retailer for a refund.

Thanks,
