A while back, don't remember exactly when, I receeived a HP Stream 8 tablet to use while away from the main computer. Normally the HP Stream is not used, but is checked for battery charge. Yesterday evening, I turned it on and saw a message to the effect that there was a mojor update (or upgrade) to the Windows 10 OS and that the version on my device would not be supported after a specific date, which has passed several months ago. Today, I was able to get the desktop to load normally. However, after attempting to clear some space for the update/upgrade I am again unable to even get to the desktop. I am not able to enter the password or PIN to unlock the tablet. Questions: If the upgrade/update is larger than available disk storage space, why is it needed? Second question: Would it be possible to replace the existing OS on the tablet with another OS like a variant of Linux? And if this is possible, how difficult or involved would it be?
Thank you,
Jim075

Thank you for choosing the HP Support Forums, a community energized by solutions, as we are eager to help resolve your concerns,
I am Riddle_Decipher and I'm at your service (Like a Genie, however, without magic powers) 😉
If you normally sign-on with an email and password, you can reset the password via another PC from the Microsoft page on the following link. Click here
And if the above doesn't work, the only option available would be to reset the device & set up a new account: Click here for steps.
To answer your other queries, the updates are sent by windows and aren't specific to your device but the entire model series, hence, you may want to delete unused apps and data to save space and install the update accordingly, I personally suggest you disable hibernation mode using the steps in this related post: Click here
As for your second query, I'm afraid we at HP do not support or recommend changing the OS to Linux based OS, however, you wish to proceed, you may do so at your own discretion.
Keep me posted, as I (Or a trusted colleague) shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,
And your device is up and running again, only in case you don't get back to us, first!
That said, If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
That'll help us, and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

As I mantioned a minute ago, the two links in the original post or suggestion only give me an "Access denied" page with the suggestion to return to the previous page. Maybe an option to open the link in a new window or page might help.
Thank you.

This might be a part, although a small part, of the overall problem: I once looked at the available space on the internal hard disk (drive C:), and thought the first time I looked the space was adequite. On a later look at the same drive, there was less than 30% of the total capacity free. Examining all of the files that were on the tabler (not many) the largese file by far was the Microsoft Operating System at close to 50+% of the total space on the drive. That plus the almost constant updates and upgrades 'offered' by Microsoft have been the main reason for considering an alternate operating system that took less space on the hard drive and did not have a lot of updates or upgrades of questional value to an average user.

It looks like you were interacting with @Riddle_Decipher, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out,

I understand you are having issues performing updates on your HP Stream Notebook. Don't worry I'll do my best to help you with this.
Follow the below steps to resolve Low Disk Space issues:
-
Run the Disk Cleanup tool, and then at the bottom of the window that pops up, click on "Clean up system files". Check everything, hit OK, and let it run. You will free up several GB for sure.
-
Another thing to do is disable hibernate file. Run CMD as Administrator, and type the following:
-
powercfg hibernate off
-
Enjoy your extra space!

Alternatively, you can try the below steps to install the Windows updates or the Windows on the computer.
Hardware you'll need
Before you can install Windows 10 on a device with low free storage space, you'll need a few things:
- A second PC to create a bootable drive.
- Two empty USB flash drives, each with at least 16GB in size.
-
Two free USB ports on your device.
- If your device has a Micro-USB port, then you'll need a USB On-The-Go (OTG) cable to adapt the Micro-USB port to a standard USB port.
- If you only have one free USB port, you'll also need a basic USB hub with a least two ports .
How to create an installation drive for Windows 10 updates
For this process, you'll need a USB flash drive with the latest installation files of Windows 10, which you can create using the Media Creation Tool.
To create a bootable media, do the following:
- Connect one of your USB flash drives to a PC other than the one you're trying to upgrade.
- Head over to the Microsoft support website to download the Media Creation Tool.
- Click the Download tool now button.
- Double-click the MediaCreationTool.exe file to launch the utility.
- Select the Create installation media for another PC option.
-
Click Next to continue.
-
Select your language, edition, and architecture.
Quick Tip: If you're trying to update a small tablet with low storage, it's likely to be using a 32-bit architecture. You can quickly check the device architecture by going to Settings > Devices > About and double-checking the System type information.
- Select the USB flash drive option.
-
Click Next.
- Select your USB flash drive from the list.
-
Click Next.
- Click Finish to complete the task.
How to install a Windows 10 update from a flash drive
To install feature updates of Windows 10, do the following:
- If necessary for your device, connect the USB OTG cable and/or the USB hub.
- Connect both the USB flash drive with the Windows 10 installation files and the other empty USB flash drive.
- Double-click the Setup.exe file to launch the Windows 10 installation from the USB flash drive.
-
Select the Keep personal files and apps option to only update your system.
- If you get the "Windows needs more space" option, click the Choose another drive or attach an external drive with 10GB available link.
- Select your empty USB flash drive to serve as temporary storage.
-
Click Refresh.
-
Click Install.
-
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process as necessary.
Note: Some devices may only have a single Micro-USB port that is used for both charging and data transfer, which can make the battery-draining update process somewhat tricky when you also need that port to connect your USB drives. Your device will reboot during the installation process, after the first reboot you will no longer need either flash drive or the USB hub to finish, so you can unplug those and connect your power cable. Of course, if your PC has a dedicated power port, you can just leave everything (power included) plugged in throughout the whole process.
After the installation completes and after a few black screens and reboots, you'll be back to your desktop once again. Because this is technically an upgrade, you won't need to go through the out-of-box experience to finish setting up Windows 10.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
