My Slate 21 is giving me a notification that a system update has been downloaded (automatically) and to "touch to install", but I'd rather not unless there's more details about what the update does. Can't see anything about this and there's no new ROM available on downloads at the moment, anyone have any info on it?

Hi Aleatorus,

I can't really comment until plans are definitive, but we are looking into possible upgrades.  I will update forums when I know more.

Hi Aleatorus,

The latest Slate 21 update was to fix some security vulnerabilities in Android 4.2.2, specifically the issues with OpenSSL.  It is suggested that all users install as soon as possible.  There is no change to the Android version you have (still 4.2.2) and there should be no visible difference in the OS.

Thanks for the info.

By the way, I had to remount the external SD card afterwards, which I wasn't expecting.

Are there any plans to upgrade the OS for the Slate 21?

surely by now the slate 21 can be upgraded to kitkat, no?

I upgraded my two Slate 21systems as recomended to kitkat only to find out that it sabotaged my system and I am now unable to write to external media. It also disabled the factory reset to the previous version!

I contacted HP and they wer willing to take back the two units and replace them with new ones.

I was advised that no new units are available and nothing they can do about it.

Now if a software update can stuff up my system another software update should be provided to fix it again!

Is HP doing anything about this or are they just abandoning their loyal customers?

Hello Grimmo,

On the issue about writing to SD and USB, this is something that has been discussed in other threads.  The brief explanation is this change is due to Android KitKat restrictions on allowing apps to write to the external drives.  This is standard for KitKat.  I posted a note about a workaround that is available at http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Android-Tablets-e-g-HP-Slate-7/Slate-21/m-p/4963655#M20289 that may be of some help.

On the factory reset issue, this is fairly standard among Android devices, including the Nexus devices from Google.  Once an update is applied, that version of Android becomes the new base for the system.  If you do a recovery it will wipe out all apps, user data and settings, but the latest version of Android that was installed will remain.

There is a test build of Android 5 for advanced users, but it is not from HP. I can read and write to my memory card with it. I was also able to easily move applications from internal memory to my SD card which is important sine the 21 series has very little internal storage.
