How do I stop the Windows 10 automatic download? I have the Home Edition of Windows 7 that works just fine. I have tried the Windows 10 update on two different occasions and it does not recognize my CD/DVD drive. I have reverted back to Windows 7 and want to keep it this way but Windows keeps trying to automatically download Windows 10. I have changed my Windows Update setting to notify me when there are updates but do not download or install. I would think this would stop it but it did not. Can anyone help me? My PC is seven years old. Windows 10 works fine on my laptop and my wife's desktop but they are only 2 years old.

Hello Mrlefty,
Nothing wrong with using Windows 7.
The fact that the CD player wasn't being recognized in Win 10 could just be a matter of doing a registry hack, but non the less...
If you want to stop the Windows 10 upgrade nag from appearing and downloading, the way I do it is to install a little piece of software called GWX Control Panel by Ultimate Outsider.
Ultimate Outsider - Software Downloads
Go to the link above and download it. There is also a users guide explaining how to use it, but the panel is pretty much self explanatory once opened.
If you have any other questions, let me know.

OK. Basically, I had the Win10 Upgrade set to go on my current computer (this one). After it loaded (while I was at work) I got a message saying my computer was too old (certain components) & I couldn't get newer ones to make the computer compatible with Win10.
So . . . I bought a refurb HP 6000 Pro with Win7Pro. It's still in the box. I got it in December.
Why is that?
Well, I'm waiting till Win10 will no longer be FORCED on you (July 30, 2016) . . . or so they say.
In the meantime I have GWX Control Panel for this current computer.
My question (finally): If I were to go ahead & fire up my refurb -- does anyone know if it has or will get the automatic Win10 upgrade?
When I bought the computer there was nothing said that it has the auto-update installed.
I'd LIKE to get the new one going.
But I definitely DO NOT want to hassle with Win10 at ALL!
As an aside, I've discovered & have been using Linux Mint via dual-boot on my current computer. I'll be adding it to the refurb too. It will probably my primary OS. But I suppose I still "need" Windows -- since I'm not very Geeky!
Any info will be much appreciated @ thanks!

Addendum -- The GWX Control Panel will be installed on the refurb -- even after July 30th (if I wait that long) -- just to be on the safe side,
Addendum, Phase Two -- I had a computer with Win98 FIRST edition on a computer up till Jan 2009. It worked fine, even after Microsoft no longer supported it. I plan to do the same with Win7Pro -- keep it FOREVER (Norton should handle any difficulties).

Nothin wrong with running Win7 now with GWX as you have discovered. Thats what I do.

Since you are dual booting Linux... You are here by officially dubbed --Geeky!

Thanks, "Ray."
Though I'm still wary of trying it, I may go ahead & boot the refurb.
It currently takes about 2.5 hours for Windows Update to work. Major hassle. I did some "Geeky" Hacks that may have helped cause this, but the hacks were both to STOP Win10 & hopefully speed things up.
I still might wait till July 30th.
But thanks again!
