Shutting down Windows 8.1 does not shut it down in the manner you think.  To allow for rapid boot when you start the system back up, shutting down now logs the user out then hibernates the base OS.  On restart, the base OS can recover from hibernation very quickly and bring you to your login screen.

Reboot, on the other hand, works just like always.  If you want to actually shut the Stream 7 down, long press the power button until you get a 'slide to shut down your pc' option.

It's more than likely that you need to restart your tablet. This is because it is reminder for you to restart your tablet due to an automatic update, and it's a way to let you know you need to restart so the updates can install. Once you restart your tablet and the updates install you should be able to click the lock button and it actually locks instead of asking you to slide down to shut down. My suggestion is to restart, not shut down, the tablet using the settings charm, touching the power icon and selecting restart. For some reason if you choose to shut down the tablet when clicking the lock button and sliding down to shut down it doesn't work to rid the lock button problem.

I've already fully restarted the tablet many times. It was the first thing I did.

THIS explains why I only hear the startup sound sometimes (cause all shut downs are not equel)   I ididn't know this, tnx all !

I'm actually having the exact same issue on my Stream 8. I turned it on today only to find that my power button doesnt work either. My question is, is sleep mode available in the power options for you? It's missing for me, and I feel like its absense is the source of our problems.

My power options show sleep, shutdown and restart.  Those terms, though, don't all match what you traditionally think of for them.  On Windows 8.1, shutdown actually logs the user out then hibernates the OS.  This is done to allow the system to boot back up quickly, and MS calls this feature 'fast startup'.  You can control it from the power options in the section on the left called 'choose what the power buttons do.'  Tap that and then scroll down and you'll see a section called 'shutdown settings.'  From there, you can disable fast startup if you wish.  You can also choose whether to display the 'sleep' option in the power menu from there.

Now, as far as sleep, that's not exactly what you may expect it to be either.  With Bay Trail processors, there is no option for traditional sleep.  Bay Trail processors use what's called 'connected standby' which is much more awake than traditional sleep.  Though there are other criteria such as fanless design, eMMC or SSD and TPM2.0, the Stream does meet all the criteria for connected standby.  It's sort of a hybrid between simply blanking the screen and sleeping, in which many processes continue that don't normally continue in traditional sleep.  This is on the premise that tablet users will want certain things to always be up-to-date as soon as they see their screen.  Email, weather apps, news apps, social media apps and basically anything that has a live tile will continue to check-in and update during 'connected standby' - hence the 'connected' part of that term.  Anywhere that you see the term 'sleep' on your Stream will actually be 'connected standby' instead, and there is no way to make what it calls sleep anything but connected standby.  The processor simply does not allow it on these devices.

Nah, during the reinstall of the realtek audio driver, my sleep function came back and my button began working again. OP, play with your drivers.

I have two HP Stream 7s.

I thought when I first got them that pressing the power button blanked the screen and put them into a low energy/battery saving mode.

On tablet #1:  I used the HP Support Assistant utility to upgrade the BIOS and UEFI on one of them, and now the power button does nothing. (Ganges/Colorado 1.0 System BIOS Release and HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI).  Battery life suffering greatly now.

On tablet #2, a press of the power button now asks me to Swipe Down to shut down.  Fired up HP Support Assistant and installed Ganges/Colorado 1.0 System BIOS Release (BIOS version F.0A).  After the restart, BIOS upgrade and restart the power button now blanks the screen! YAY!.  Control panel indicates the power button action is set to SLEEP.  Tablet#2 is fixed!

Back to tablet#1:  Power button is set to SLEEP in control panel, but nothing happens when pressing power button.  😞  

The Differences I can see:

The broken one (tablet#1) has:

1. the UEFI updated. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI  softpaq: SP69313 version: 5.6.2.0Ap1  ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp69001-69500/sp69313.html
2. Bluetooth A2DP driver 6.3.9600 installed
3. Bluetooth Personal Area Networking 6.3.9600 installed

Tablet #2 (working) has:

• office installed. tablet #1 does not.
• uefi 5.6.0.0 not 5.6.2.0
• No bluetootch A2DP or PAN driver installed.

Both systems:

System Board 8031 n/a bios F.0A

realtek i25 audio 6.2.9600.4179

Window driver Package Sesnor IO packages: 1.2.6.3 6/26/2014

Questions to other power button sufferers:

1. What does your power button do?
2. What is your power button set to do in Control Panel?
3. What version of BIOS is installed? (check in HP support assistant)
4. What version of UEFI is installed? (check in HP support assistant)
5. Do you have the bluetooth drivers installed? (check in HP support assistant)

Upgraded the UEFI on tablet#2, and power button still sleeps.  Cant blame the new UEFI.

When I set the power button action to SHUTDOWN that works. 

It appears to be a sleep versus hibernate issue.

When you go the advanced settings under the power options in control panel:

• Power buttons and lid -> Power button action -> On battery and Plugged in.

it is set to sleep, but if you change it, the drop down list does not have sleep in it.  Ony "do nothing" "hibernate" and "shut down".

On the working tablet, sleep is available in this drop down.

Go to Realtek Network Card Advanced Property. Enable "Wake on Pattern Match". The sleep button should work again.

BTW, I have no idea how the sleep button will tie to a network card properties. Apparent some engineer failed to get the button to work properly, and just hack it thru with a chain saw. Sigh. Hp quality.
