Hello, and Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Have you tried using a File Manager app?  Are you trying to transfer from the tablet's memory, or from a computer??

Google changed the way apps can write to an SD card with the advent of KitKat.

Perhaps this article can help explain how Google changed Android KitKat 4.4:

KitKat and SD cards — what's fixed, what's broken and what's misunderstood.

Hi WyreNut, thanks for your response - these are BRAND NEW tablets (4 of them) just purchased in December as xmas gifts, they have an internal memory of 8GB with an expandable memory of upto an additional 32GB  - totalling 40GB

we purchased a 32 GB memory card for each tablet at the same time as buying the tablets - and just to confirm - yes we have inserted them into the tablets - there is a constant message displayed (top left) stating  'sdcard is mounted' but we are unable to transfer ANYTHING to the card as we cannot find out how and cannot find any option to enable us to do this.

I appreciate the article you sent but as these are all BRAND NEW I assume that any 'fix' issue should already be on the tablets? and any update should've automattically occured when we first switched them on?

I would very much appreciate your further help in 'stupid person' langauge if you or someone else is able to help.

We have tried transferring both from the tablets and via a laptop with the lead connected between the tablet and laptop.

I'm in a similar position (new tablets for XMAS with 8Gb memory and now almost useless memory cards) ... I don't think you're going to like the answer ..... the "upgrade" to 4.4.2 Kit kat implemented, as intended by Google, changes to the way SD cards are handled which removed much of the funcationality Android users have become accustomed to. Do some google searches on SD cards and Kitkat and you'll get the gist of the issue and also how irrate many Android users are. Where this leaves those of us with brand new devices which have only 8gb of internal storage, I'll leave you to form your own opinions .... but this is very much an Android and therefore Google generated situaiton.

The article I linked you to explains how Android KitKat works.  They changed the way we normally would expect SD cards to function.  I'm assuming your new tablets came with Android 4.4.x. (KitKat).

Here's a link to Working with files with KitKat  from the support pages for the HP 7 II 1311 tablet.  I'm guessing this is what you might have since the term "HP 7 G2" produces no results from searching the support section.

From that link above:

Can I connect the tablet to a computer to transfer files?

Yes, you can connect the tablet to another computer using the USB cable. Disconnect the USB cable from the AC adapter and connect it to one of the USB ports on your computer. Connect the other end of the cable to the micro-USB port on the tablet. Wait for the USB driver to install on your computer. If a screen lock method (such as pattern, PIN, or password) is set, unlock the tablet. The tablet appears as an external storage device on your computer.

Why can't I see my files when I connect my tablet to a computer?

If you are signed in to the tablet with a user account, your locally stored files and folders might not be available when connected to a computer. Sign in to the tablet owner account to access files stored on the tablet from a computer, and make sure the screen is unlocked (if a lock method, such as pattern, PIN, or password, is set).

Hope this helps!

Hi!, pseaman:

Welcome, to Forum !.

Please, see ... http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Android-Tablets-e-g-HP-Slate-7/Hp-7-G2-Dose-not-allow-Installing-apps-o...

Note: If you have your tablet under warranty, HP didn't recognize Root.

If not have warranty, you can root (with your risk) your tablet, from PC, with KINGO ROOT.

Kind Regards !.
Have a nice day !.

Have you tried what was suggested earlier in this thread?  I can connect my HP 10 Plus tablet to my PC and see both internal storage, and the SD card inserted into it.  It's running KitKat 4.4.2.

I can copy pictures and videos from one to the other with ease...
