WyreNut - Please excuse me popping in here on this thread but I wanted to thank you for your wise information / instruction about this very subject. I was on another forum that you were on and then came here. I had this very same situation to deal with and I'm glad to report, it will work as expected but took me forever to get it done. Had to deal with each and every hickup along the way.
I was using a Win Xp machine originally and wanted to get my Palm Desktop working in my new Dell Computer with an upgraded Win 8.1.
My last hurtle to over come to get everything working properly, and I found this information no where on the forums. You have to install Palm Desktop in the root directory, and NOT under any of the Program File Folders! If auto installed in 'Program Files (x86) as the default installation location, it will not work. Windows 8 will not allow this to work, I found out. I went and re-installed it to C:\palmOne and it worked like a charm after getting version 6.2 downloaded and the 64-bit drivers as specified. I'm so glad for these new drivers!
I hope this information will help any and all those going through the same difficulties I went through. I figured this out when I realized that GSAK will not work under any Program File Folders either. It also has to be installed under the root directory.
So many thanks again WyreNut for getting my geocaching experience back on track, the way it used to be before Win 8.1. Just wanted to let you aware of this installation and it will work as before.

Thank you.....before I got your second response but knowing from your first response that I had to install the drivers, I went back in to the download and found a way to open the instructions (at first they kept coming up blank). So I installed them and now am running my first HotSync on my new computer. Thanks SO much....have had a Palm for over 10 years and would be lost without it so really appreciate your help. Made my day! Have a great rest of the weekend.

Thanks for the kind words, Losel2! Glad I was able to help you "way back when"! 🙂
Your advice might help some users, but stating the "auto-install" does not work is incorrect. I'm not sure how Palm Desktop 6.2 got installed into a Program File directory on your machine! Did you change the install directory when the program was installing? Did you first attempt to install Palm Desktop 4.x?
When allowed to "auto-install", Palm 6.2.2 installs into C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\Palm OS Desktop. This runs just fine on my HP Spectre x2 loaner ultrabook running Windows 8.1. This has been reported as working correctly by many users here.
I just did a HotSync to one of my TX's with this machine without a problem. Member "HPEnvyRed" also demonstrated this setup works in a post after yours when he/she followed the instructions in the Sticky post at the beginning of this section of the Forum.
Glad you did eventually get it working! As the I Ching states, "Perseverance Furthers!" 😄

As a top contributor to the HP Consumer Support Forums, HP provides me access to the Spectre x2 Ultrabook at no charge so I may better respond to the questions raised on the Forum.
Hi Losel2, glad I was able to help you out "back in the day"! 😄
While your advice about where to install Palm Desktop 6.2.2 might help some users, something seems to have gone wrong on your machine during the installation.
Palm Desktop 6.2.2 installed just fine into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Palm directory on my present computer. I have it installed on my brand-new Spectre x2 ultrabook loaner from HP (running Windows 8.1), and it installed and runs correctly as intended! To verify, I just completed another successful HotSync to my TX.
Forum Member HPEnvyRed just completed the same task, without any installation problems by following this Sticky thread at the beginning of this section of the Forum.
Glad you did get PD running correctly! As the I Ching states, "Perseverance Furthers!" 🙂

WyreNut,
Everything HotSynced fine into PalmDesktop and then I tried to HotSync into Outlook. I have Outlook 2013. And it said it synced but nothing happened so I looked through the forum....am I reading everything correctly that I have to go through all the steps that Pizzaguy (I think that's his name) has in order to get it to sync with Outlook 2013 and maybe it doesn't even work with 2013? If so, I may be just happy getting it to sync with PalmDesktop. Again, thank you for your guidance.

Yeah, things got pretty dicey syncing to Outlook after 2007... Pizzaboy192 is your guy - he really took point on that subject, and wrote a patch or two.
I haven't used Outlook with my Palm PDA's, so I don't have much first-hand advice to offer. 😞

WyreNut - I really don't remember if my auto install was changed or not, perhaps I did it, just don't remember. Sorry, probably my bad. I just know it didn't work for me at that location and took me forever and a lot of doing to make it work. But perhaps between our logs, others that might do the same as I did, will get right on track in the first place. Thanks very much for your insight, keep up the great work.
