HP Pavilion 10-n154 x2 Detachable PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

windows again has just about stopped tablet running due to the size taken up by the o/s. All the usual steps have already been taken - switching off hibernation, removing all old windows files  (that I can get to) I've run cleaner, and reduced apps to bare minimum of 2.8gb.

c drive currently at 26.2 of 28.4gb of which 23.1 is system and reserve and 2.8 apps.

What else can I do to reduce the amount of space windows is obviously absorbing?

or just accept win10 cannot be run on this machine and throw it away!!

Hello @johnmobil8

Its hard for me to say without actually looking at your machine, so I'll add this...

If you've already done these things, then sorry to sound reduntant...

To "properly" remove all Windows Old files, use Windows Disk Cleanup and click on Clean up system files.

You can see whats taking a lot of space on the right side. Look for Previous Windows installations and check the box.

That's usually the main culprit.

Also get a Micro SD card and install it.

Move all your default folders over to the SD card. This will keep all your personal files off the C drive.

  • Create a new folder in the SD card for every default folder you wish to move... Docs, Photos, Music, etc.
  • Right click on the Documents folder and choose Properties.
  • Click the Location tab
  • Click on Move and navigate to the new folder you created for Documents, select that folder.
  • Then click on Apply and OK.

Do this for any others you wish to move. Only default data folders can be moved, not system files or updates.

If you havent tried it,

Ccleaner also has a Tool called Disk Analyzer and Duplicate Finder that can give you a list of data folders/files that are taking up space.

Thats about all I can offer.

Hope it helps.

Almost forgot...

You can remove downloaded updates files and HP driver unzips since they are already installed.

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

C:\Windows\Installer  (enable Hidden files to see it in Windows Explorer)

C:\swsetup

This would free up a few gigs.

hi

many thanks for reply though had infact done most of your suggestions the only one I seem to be failing on is to stop the hibernation file which is around 800mb. Have already installed C cleaner and run. The problem lies mainly in the system and reserved section of drive details of which:

system files 20.5gb

virtual memory 1.98gb

Hibernation file 788Mb

System restore 0gb

When new, windows was only around 6gb but as soon as it updated this rose to around 16gb which would have been tollerable but every update since has absorbed more and more. How anyone with tablets with only 16gb drives ever runs windows .....

Very many thanks for your help and should you have any other suggestions be most grateful

If you turn off hibernate mode and this will delete the hiber file and not create another one.

Open a command prompt as admin.

Type cmd in the Search Bar, then press Ctrl/Shift/Enter.

Yes for the security warning.

To turn it off...   powercfg -h off

To turn it on...   powercfg -h on

Is restore points turned off?

An easy way to check is back in Ccleaner/System Restore. If there are any restore points, delete them.

Im not sure what else is taking up space.

I have a stream 8 tablet with the latest Version 1709. I haven't cleaned out any of that stuff above and its only using 14 GB of space on a 32 GB drive.

The last resort would be to clean install Windows via the MS Media Creation Tool and a USB drive. Delete all the partitions during a custom install if you do. HP has the drivers you can reinstall again afterward.

Many thanks got hibernation switched off so have gained another 788 mb! that gives 3gb of headroom for the time being. Guess will end up eventually doing the clean reinstall eventually.

Irrespective should have thought more about Windows memory requirements before buying

I have already got a 64gb card in it for programmes and data, so can run it like that for time being.

Shame really because it is a nice little tablet with the detachable keypad extremely useful when away from home.

again thanks
