Do I have to uninstall my old printer driver before I install the new one I downloaded?  If so, how do I do that correctly?

@ROBSAL

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand, you wish to download new printer drivers on your computer,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Were you facing any technical difficulties while trying to print?

Are you trying to install updated drivers on your computer?

You could perform root level uninstallation and reinstallation of printer drivers following steps given below:

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP DeskJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

Let me know how this goes 🙂

Have a great day 🙂

Cheers 😉

Thank you so much Flower_Bud and everyone else.  Let me tell you what I have experienced.  I downloaded a new priter drive originally because I kept having connection problems between my computer and printer.  After I installed the new printer, it solved my connection problems, but limited my capabilities as I have described them,

My problem now is that each time I attempt to install the drivers everyone has been so kind to suggest, the install fails and I get the following message:

THE PRINTER WAS UNABLE TO INSTALL OVER THE NETWORK

i am only able to do this wirelessly because my printer does not have a usb port.  I am only trying to update my driver, but it does it as though it is installing a new printer each time.  Maybe that is normal.  Anyway, I have been told that I need to uninstall my present driver first, but I am afraid I will get more failure notices and not be able to print at all.  At least I can print right now.

This is what happens to an ignorant man.

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

Is the printer connected to the network? Check the wireless light. If the light is steady blue, then the printer is connected to the network. If the light is flashing, then the printer is not connected to the network. Go to Setup - Network - Wireless setup wizard to connect the printer to the network.

Once the printer is connected to the network, then assign a static IP to the printer:

For Windows:  HP Printers - Printer is Offline (Windows)

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
  • Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says, “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on radio button which says, “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)
  • Restart the printer and then router once done.

Once these steps are completed, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling printer drivers.

Keep me posted 🙂

Cheers 😉
