Welcome to the HP User Community.
Reformatting the drive did (of course) delete all the data on the drive.
The SimpleSave software was located on the drive.
You might be able to find a copy of the software on the 'net.
Yeah, but...
BE CAREFUL of downloading this software from an unknown source.
Why?
SimpleSave is really old software,
SimpleSave is proprietary software that encrypts the backups (you cannot access backups without the software)
AND
SimpleSave is completely and utterly unsupported.
Find, Download from the Internet...
Sure, you could get away with it - or you could end up in more trouble than just having to find some new backup software.
Opinion
Having already lost the backups: AVOID using the old SimpleSave software again.
The physical drive is likely old - these, too, tend to fail after a few years - another dead end.

What to do?
For now,
Make a backup of the data you had been saving to that now-formatted drive - put the data anywhere that is not on your computer proper (local drives) and is not the old SimpleSave formatted drive.
Consider copying your important data to a USB stick if you lack other options.
Better "something" than nothing, in other words.
What kind of backup software -
Whatever you like - your decision...
There are LOTS of options, particularly if you are running a newer version of Windows.
Confused? Need time to consider?
Consider (for newer Windows) using File History
- File History is relatively easy to configure, can back up to most remote destinations (including a NAS) AND is not proprietary.
- If necessary, the backup destination allows you to see / access / retrieve the data without the File History Software.
